Chain tool - do you carry one on your rides? Have you actually used one on your rides? Should I get one for my rides?

One is part of my multi tool that I bring on all my rides EXCEPT for a sprint race.

Yes, I have used one when MTN biking and I busted my chain.

It's up to you to get one - it's like a condom.  Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have one!

Last week's LA Tri ride up Deer Creek saw two chains break.  Wasn't there, but someone had a tool, would have been a long walk /wait for loved one without it....

That said.  No, I don't carry one.

Really? I'm not sure which is better...

I've no clue how to use a chain tool, need to ask someone at my LBS I guess.  Also need to learn how to do a derailleur adjustment as I discovered on yesterday's ride.

I have a small multi-tool that includes a chain tool, which I used once about a year ago when my chain broke on a ride.  I had never used it before, but I was able to figure it out, it's pretty simple.  I always carry it, along with an extra pin or 2.  It hardly takes up any space and who knows, I might need it again one day, or encounter someone on the road who does.

I haven't ever carried one, but a good friend dropped out of a his first half iron aquabike when his chain broke and he didn't have a tool. I considered it after that, but haven't done much about it.

I have one on my multi.

I had to say a quick prayer to the Gear Gods when I realized I left my tool pouch on my MTB as I was driving to Saturday's race.

Thankfully, I did not flat or have any mechanical issues. *tips 40 to Gear Gods*

I've only snapped a chain once during a ride, and a buddy had his chain tool.. It didn't help my poor chain.

So I'd pass on it.

Surprised no one said this yet... "thats what she said!!! ... ohhhhhhh"

Okay I digress I don't carry it at all.  But I do carry my trusty cell phone that can get me out of a lot of problems.

I definitely carry one.  It's in my crank brothers multitool, so pretty easy.  A busted chain is no fun at all, I did get to use mine to help someone fix his chain one time, so hopefully karma will be on my side.

Yes and yes.  I've used it on my own bikes (new chain, had tight link in it) and helped others when they've had problems.

But I'm also a mechanic from a previous life, so I know what I'm doing with it .........

Yes, I carry one.  Used it many times on my Mtn bike (used to carry a small length of spare chain bummed off of the LBS).  Used it once on my road bike to get me home when I snapped it on a climb.  It is one hell of an ego boost to snap a chain on a climb, almost makes up for the nuisance of having to fix it and then replace it when you get home.  It doesn't weigh much and you will be a hero on the group ride.

A looong time ago when I was on my college racing team they poked fun of me one day for carrying a chain tool.

About 2 hours into the ride, someone else's chain broke.  Everyone looked at me sheepishly.  There was one very greatful and apologetic teammate that day.

I have one on most of my multi-tools. I've never needed it on a ride, but I'd hate to need it and not have it.

I also have an old style Cool Tool, that has a crescent wrench and old fashioned head set wrench.  I used to need it for mrs gearboy's bike which did not have a quick release in the rear.  Now I just have it for any big group rides where I might need to help someone out who has an older bike.

MTB - yes (multi-tool). Road - No. Only time I ever had to use it was back in my mtb racing days. Then again, grinding over rocks, dropping off tops, etc, you're bound to do some damage eventually.

negative for me, my multi tool doesn't have one either. I've only snapped a chain once in my life and it sucked super bad. Man I hope that doesn't happen again

I carry the portable Park Tools one. It's smaller than one of those mini Clif bars so I see no reason not to just stick it in a jersey pocket (or in my Camelbak for mountain rides).

I never needed it for my own chain until a couple of years ago in VT - I somehow dropped my chain halfway up a climb and my tree-trunk like legs mangled it to the point where I had to remove a few links to be able to ride the rest of the day. Now it goes with me on every ride.

Yes. It's part of my multi tool. Last time I used it was 2003.

I also carry sram quick links in 8 and 9 speed. I switch the bag between my mountain and road bikes and one of the mountain bikes is 8 speed. If I do break a chain I just take out the bad link and replace it with a quick link. Problem solved and no need to replace the chain when I get home unless it's too short.
