If they had announced it in the race packet/meeting/rules that "No shoes will be allowed to be clipped in before the bike leg" then I would get that.  But if they just did it after the fact of their own volition without announcing it??  Not cool.

I'm in the camp of about half and half.  Depending on the course and my bike placement, I'll make the game day call as to whether they are clipped in or not.

I'll look for it, it was stated in the race rules, no shoes clipped in.

I have heard the same story about the RD going thru and unclipping the shoes, the story I heard was that the RD did make an announcement that no shoes were allowed clipped in (I think it was a HIM) and then they went thru and unclipped the shoes of violators.

Leaving your shoes clipped in is not really that big of a deal it just takes practice, kind of like running with your bike when you are holding it by the seat. I cannot tell you how many times I have watch people run with their bike thru transition and almost run into racks or run into people because they do not know how to hold the seat, run, and steer their bikes.

for all the new people, here are a few tips. Oh and if you wonder what time is saves, I do have a 24 second TI time at a tri.

1. practice, practice, just like someone said, leave your shoes clipped in all the time. I always leave them clipped in, even if I am getting on the trainer. That way you can practice getting off the bike also...
2. Run past the mount/dismount line when you are going to get on your bike, there is nothing wrong with going a extra 5-10 yards to get a clear area to get on your bike. At Memphis in May the mount line is on a little hill and I always just run up the hill and get on the bike then... I always pass a few people who are trying to get on their bike, then they stand up to pedal because there is a 30 yard hill they have to climb.
3. Wait till you are up to speed before you try to put your feet in your shoes, even if it is a half mile or so... I can do it at any speed but it is A LOT easier when your going 16 mph or faster.

The main thing is practice, just like anything in this sport... nutrition, bricks, etc. It all takes practice.
Remember you are timed for the whole event... so just as you swim, bike, run, all week long to get your times down. You should everyonce in a while practice your T1/T2s to get those times down as well. It makes no sense to spend all that time in the pool to take off 3 minutes and then turn around and give it back in T1.

Not positive but I believe that might affect even BOP-ers times

I leave my shoes clipped in except when there is an uphill right at the start. I do not do a full flying mount but am able to get my feet on top of the shoes without completely stopping and then I start pedaling right away. I use rubber bands to keep the shoes in the proper position. Once I am up to cruising speed I get my feet in the shoes. I put some Vaseline around the opening to allow for easier entry and I fold back the tongue a bit so it sticks to the Velcro that holds the strap. I'd imagine the flying mount could save a few seconds and maybe I'll get there.

i am a newbie.  but many times people don't practice enough....and then they have problems.

my suggestion is this go on a 15 min ride, clip shoes and just practice putting feet in and removing them out.  the day before the race.  IF YOU HAVE tri bike shoes is to hold the loop, balance the bike with 1 hand and then slide your foot in without looking.

to answer your question yes there is very good video on youtube.  but i am at work sorry.

This is great advice for everyone, not just people with their shoes clipped in.  Last year I was watching a race where there was a 90 degree corner coming out of T1.  The mount line was before the corner.  I watched racer after racer cross the mount line, mount their bike, and fall over trying to make a 90 degree turn.  6 feet of walking would have seen them on a shallow downhill slope perfect for getting moving.  It was mildly entertaining to watch.

I saw a thread on slowtwitch about this, and was VERY surprised how 95% said it was stupid to do as an AGer. I would have figured that crowd to be all over it. They were saying how it's dangerous (most people suck at it) and too many people in a small exit to do it. Never even tried it myself.

might be stupid for AGer but i HATE running with bike shoes on.  especially if the transition area is not grass or sand.  which has happend in MIT triathlon and it was a MASSIVE transition area.

This is all REALLY good stuff. However, no one has even mentioned that, after you have pedalled for a while with your feet on top of your shoes, that the toungue is now flattened down onto your shoe and it's a little bit of manuevering to get the toungue back up so you can get your foot in. Any thoughts? Anyone?
I find myself using my opposite hand to physicall pull the toungue back up. Is there a better way?!

I always want to try the flying mount, but I have trouble clearing my seat.  That thing is up there!

yes my shoes do that.  i have them open as far as i can before and just try to find the shoe opening with my toes.  sometimes it takes little fidelling.  but this is where tri shoes are nice.  the loop helps to keep the shoe in once place.

honestly before every bike ride and after one i usually practice taking them off and on.  had no problems.

most races I've done recently don't allow it anymore so know I just put on my shoes on T1 and run out and then fly-mount on my bike. I do leave them on when dismounting for T2 though...

Exactly.  I'm pretty sure most legit tri shoes will not have one.
