Subject: End caps? Bar end plugs?
What are these?

I went to a first timer clinic last week and she mentioned we want to make sure we have our caps on so there are no sharp edges.

Just now I read in a thread to make sure you have your bar end plugs.

What are these?  Is it two names for the same thing?  Would it come on my bike?  My bike is new and I have no idea if it has caps/ends/plugs.

TIA,
Keri

Same thing, just a plug in the end of your handelbar incase you crash, so it doesn't poke into your leg/ arm/ butt (that would be a bad crash).  If your bike is new you should be all set.

They're basically the same thing - plastic plugs for either the ends of your handlebars or your aerobars (or bar ends if you're using a mountain bike). They *should* come with your bike, as they're a safety item.

In a pinch (or if you're old school) champagne or wine corks will suffice.

Yes, they come with your bike. Pre-race, make sure they're both there, as you can be penalized if it's a USAT-sanctioned race.

If you do lose one, though, most bike shops have extras sitting around that they will either give you, or charge you a small fee for; most likely, just give it to you - I lost one of mine, and they gave me a nifty Cervelo one to put on my cheap-o bike

Yes, they come with your bike. Pre-race, make sure they're both there, as you can be penalized disqualified (Rule 5.11.i) if it's a USAT-sanctioned race.

Corrected in blue. Depending on your aerobar setup, you might not have any - my aerobar ends have shifters and my brakes are on the end of the horns. And I'll echo what the others have said, don't pay more than $1 for two, if you have to pay for them at all.

And always carry a spare in your transition bag, as the ones on my road bike have a tendency to get knocked out when putting it in the car.

Meh - it's still bad, same point If you have a tribike, yes, you probably don't have them. But road bikes always have them.

Ok, I'm feeling kvetchy and pedantic this AM. Too much coffee.

There was a time where putting the shifters in the ends of the drop bars on road bikes was popular. If you have that, you won't have bar end plugs. Tongue outTongue outTongue out

One triathlon I went to had the parking about 2 miles from the transition area.  I packed all my stuff in my backpack and rode to the transition area.  I set everything out and got ready for the triathlon.
As usual I drank too much coffee in the morning and was pretty tense.  As I was walking around the transition area the ref came abruptly up to me and said I was disqualified.  I was missing a bar end plug.  Fortunately one of the mechanics fixed me up with this:

bar end

So, yes, it is important to have bar plugs.  Probably not a bad idea to have a few extra in the bag.

1.)  That's just great.

2.)  To your later point about having extra...I am huge 'community' guy and have found myself playing "hero" twice by having extra bar plugs and a helmet (which was in my car).  You never know what people might forget/need.
