DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE ON PERFECTING AN IN-WATER START?

- I FEEL THAT I OVER EXERT MYSELF ON THIS PART OF THE SWIM.

You mean the pre-start treading water? Or actually getting going without any momentum from a wall push-off or a run-and-dive into the water?

my last in water start (North East Sprint) started from a dock so I stayed on the dock as long as possible to conserve energy that would be wasted on treading water. When I finally got in, I slowly started making my way forward so that when the horn went off I was already moving forward.

If you're wondering about this for Kinetic, last year's swim start was a beach run in, so no treading water and you can get started with a dive if you are up for it.

I hope it is a Beach Run Start. It does not state anything on the web regarding how we are going to start the swim this weekend.

Thanks,

I guess we will wait and see.

If you're wearing a wetsuit, it will be easy to float and not have to tread much at all, since the suit will keep you pretty buoyant - you should just be able to sort of float laying back a bit and sculling lightly with your hands. Without a suit - tread as little as possible, just enough to keep yourself from sinking. You shouldn't have to tread for that long, since they probably won't let you in the water until the wave before you goes off.

Treading is ok, but it doesn't put you in the best position for a quick start.  Float on your stomach for the last 10 - 15 seconds before the race starts.  At about 5 seconds, put your face in the water.  You can start pulling when they say 1 because you won't make any forward progress until the gun goes off.
