Sunny
Total Time = 1h 08m 7s
Overall Rank = 19/172
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 8/34
Pre-race routine:

Long walk to transition from parking area. Still deciding if wetsuit or not. Water is wetsuit legal, but not too bad, but I need the practice of getting that thing off quickly in transition...
Event warmup:

Light jogging, stretching. Still deciding on the wetsuit...I HATE practicing things in a race.
Swim
  • 15m 35s
  • 600 yards
  • 02m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was still afraid of sharks, even though they've only been spotted north of us this past week. Water was crystal clear, flat as a pancake, just brisk enough to make you want to go fast...AKA perfect!

Actual swim time was much faster than that. Swim was long, probably at least 600 yds (the fastest guys came in over 8 minutes, so it was DEFINITELY long) and the run to transition was ~1/4 mile (up the beach, thru the tunnel, down the path, across the parking lot) to get to the chip pad to mark transition.
What would you do differently?:

swim faster!
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

Wetsuit stuck a little on the hips (UH-OH!).

Long, narrow bike rack area.
What would you do differently?:

Have thinner hips?
Bike
  • 28m 18s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.20 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike time also included T2...forgot to click the lap on my watch.

I was SOOOO happy with how I did on the bike. Most of it was 21-22 mph...slowed only for the bridge and when actually in the park. Did I mention it was a PERFECT day for a tri?
What would you do differently?:

Keep working on it!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Very smooth...no problems. All the sand seemed to be off my feet.
Run
  • 22m 34s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Very happy, but was thirsty. One water stop we passed twice, plenty for a 5K...just thirsty.
Post race
Warm down:

Light jog down the race path to another friend in her first ever tri and trotted her in.

Event comments:

Only thing I didn't like was being in the 5th of 5 waves, with a 7 minute span between waves...but it was necessary. The bike course was narrow and they needed a way to try and keep folks more spread out.

Once again, my age group was the toughest (40-44). Had I been 39, I'd have placed 2nd in my age group instead of 8th!

Yay! You didn't get eaten by sharks. Glad you wore the wetsuit, if only for protection from the sea creatures. It was a perfect day here for a tri, couldn't have asked for any better. That's crazy how competitive your age group is! 8th still is pretty darn good. See you in a few weeks for St. A!

Hi Sharon, it was nice to see you again. What a beautiful day we had. You had a great race, really nice bike split! And don't worry about the sealife, just do what my daughter does, CLOSE YOUR EYES! If you can't see it, it doesn't exist. See you in St. Pete.

Sharon - it looks to me like you totally nailed both the bike and the run section of this tri, and the swim wasn't too shabby either. And hey - 8th in your AG - well, let's just say that doesn't suck.

Your hips are fine!! Don't worry about sharks. They will probably go for those either in front, back or on the sides. Just stay in the middle of the pack.

I love it when the add a fourth leg from the water to T1. :-) Looks like a nice solid race with some good times. Way to go.

One Q: Did you take your wetsuit off in the transition area or immediately after exiting the water? In cases where there is a long run from the swim exit to the transition area, some people take the wetsuit off immediately upon exiting the water. That way it is still pretty wet and removes easily. By the time you got to the trans. area it may have dried off, making removal difficult.

BTW, great job on the bike leg!
