Well, my buddy Mike is planning to do a sprint tri with me this summer, and doesn't have a road bike. I picked up this gem (a Ted Williams Free Spirit) for $14.99 at the Salvation Army..don't you love the handlebars?

Here's what it looked like yesterday:

And here's what it looks like tonight..I think the investment is up to $25 or so if I count the spray paint and cables from Walmart. It should do to get him out on the road, anyway.

right on! fixing up old bikes is a favorite hobby of my husband's. he just finished finishing up work on my 70s dunelt 3-speed (will have to post some pictures). many of the older frames are so much better than some of the new stuff out there. good work!

Maybe this is where I can ask a question...

My dad has offered my son his old Puegot frame from the 80's. It was a pretty nice bike when he rode it - did several RAGBRAI's with it in the 80's. After he developed a serious heart condition, he had to give up riding and the bike has been hanging in his shed ever since.

I know the components are probably shot. But is it worth getting the frame shipped here from TX and putting on new components, etc?

Hey, aren't you the guy who accidentally bought another bike recently?  What was it, a B2 or P3 that had been crashed and had a busted head tube?  If you've fixed that up, your buddy could be really fast!

Where's the pix of that bike?

Ahh, here's the thread: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=14776&posts=20#s

I actually saw somebody riding with this handle bar setup last saturday. I thought it was quite odd but I guess he's not so unique!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who suffers from this sort of compulsive behavior. In general, I love to tinker, and it shows in nearly anything I am interested in. I've been reading Sheldon Brown's web site and now I'm thinking about building a tandem..

I think my first new bike was a Sears bike too. I remember being ecstatic when my brother bought it for me..our family couldn't otherwise afford it.

Well, just taking things apart, cleaning, putting new cables on, and a paint job is pretty cheap ($10-15 for this bike). Remember that these bikes aren't modern lightweights, and the old style ball bearings are annoying to take out, keep track of, track down spares when you lose one..
That would probably restore your dad's old bike to rideable shape, anyway. Would it be a good fit for you?

I'm not letting anybody near the B2. That's MINE. I took it 20 miles or so Saturday, and I love it already.

Unfortunately, it won't fit me. I would take it for a training bike in a hot minute. My dad was 6'1"-6'2" when he bought that. I'm only 5'9". My son, however, is 6'2"-6'3". We think it will fit him. He's headed off to NC State this fall - Raleigh is hillier that Wilmington (almost anywhere is hillier than Wilmington) and NC State doesn't allow freshmen to have cars on campus. He has a MTB but it's heavy and, as all of you know, not the best for on road. I thought maybe this older bike would be less prone to theft and I wouldn't care as much if it took some of the usual campus abuse...

I'm having Dad take it to his LBS in Harlingen (if anyone knows a good one down there, let me know) to make sure that it doesn't have any fundamental damage. If it's sound he's going to ship it out here. From what you've said, it would make a good project for my budding engineer son to fix it up for a cheap campus ride.
