Subject: Bike Mileage Thingy?

I see these posts where people know how far and how fast they go and I think "hey, that might be handy".

After I ride I hop in my super cool mini van and drive the path I just biked - that is how I roll   But it seems it would be nice to have that information without wasting gas.

So.... I'm guessing I get one of these thingy's at my LBS but what kind?  And how much do they cost?  I have WAY over spent my tri budget for the year but I do have a big 4-0 birthday coming up so maybe, just maybe my boys will spend their lawn mowing & babysitting money to get one for me Laughing

Bike Thingy=bike computer!!!  Sounds expensive and difficult to use right....nope!!!  Decide what you want to "measure"--in other words what you want: MPH, distance, average mph, heart rate, cadence.  There are plenty of posts on here about computers---they vary from cheap to much more expensive and from wired to wireless etc.......search bike computer

They have those thingies at Target for about $20.- too if you're on the budget.

You can buy bike computers in a lot of places.  I got my last one at Dicks Sporting Goods, they even have cheaper ones at WalMart.  However, I might recommend that you look online either at Bike Nashbar or Performance Bike.  You can find a basic one with only a few features for less than $20.

Like these? I like the Cateye Vectra Wireless, which is on sale at REI for around $30. I like the wireless models better for ease of set-up, but some people think the wired are better due to interference (which I haven't had an issue with). (Of course, mrs gearboy prefers NOT to see how fast she maxed out...)

*cough cough* LBS!  LBS!  *cough cough*

Your friendly neighborhood local bike shop can hook you up - they'll probably even install it for you if you ask nicely.  You don't need a super-fancy one - speed, distance, etc.  Wireless is nice, but it's not necessary and costs a few bucks more. 

Your new computer shouldn't cost more than $20-30.

Cateye strada Cadence and cateye astrale 8 ar etwo that I have right now on my road and tri bikes. Both good and relaiable, both have cadence, and both are under $40. The Mity 8 is also a good one if you don't care about cadence at all. And it's hella cheap...

Thanks, that is what I have been doing.  I logged my long bike ride yesterday.  One of the members on this board has been after me to log my training so I'm trying to be a good little doobie so the log police doesn't have to come after me Smile

For $30-40, the Cateye Strada Cadence will give you all the info you need. I tried to wing it for a while when I got a new bike; I could time how fast I was going pretty easily, especially on the trail, but I was surprised how off I was when it came to cadence.

Jinkies indeed. I agree with the LBS or Performance, which is my LBS. Go with Cateye. Get wired with cadence or wireless without and you are still in pretty cheap and have a ton of info.

I like the Cateye Astrale - it's wired, but it's rear-mounted, so you can log mileage on the trainer as well. It comes with a cadence sensor too. I got it on sale at Performance Bikes for $40.
