Swim
  • 20m 20s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 02s / 100 meters
Comments:

Missed projected time by 50 seconds. Beat last year's time by 1:02. SPL's were so much higher than my training spl's even when I go faster. I was in awe, wondering why I was feeling tired and why my form was faulty. I had high expectations for the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Relax. Learn to deal with negative, unexpected situations.
Transition 1
  • 01m 43s
Comments:

Took way too long...my rack was the farthest out from the transition entrance. Could not get cycling shoes on properly.
What would you do differently?:

I have to get accostumed to the strapping system of these new Duegi cycling shoes. Practice more.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 43s
  • 40 kms
  • 27.68 km/hr
Comments:

Got a flat in the last few KM's. Rode it out with very little PSI's. Almost skidded out of control in one of the last turns after a short downhill. However, I don't feel the flat significantly affected my time.
What would you do differently?:

I would disregard the HRM in such a short race. The whole time I was looking obsessively at the monitor and bike computer, wondering all sorts of stuff. A big distraction.
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Both transitions amounted to 3:07. I had planned for 2:30. Last year's time was 2:49.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more. Hope rack is not so far away from transition entrance.
Run
  • 55m 22s
  • 10 kms
  • 05m 32s  min/km
Comments:

The run did go as planned, as far as projected time (beat it by 38 sec) and was 5 minutes faster than last year. It's funny how the thing that I was worried about the most (the run) was actually the only part of the race that worked out perfectly and even slightly better than expected. It was definitely a strange day for me. :)
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, watched other racers finish. Got gatorade and food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Iron-distance training has made me slower for this race (or so I think), but fast enough for those longer races. I had some stomach issues at the beginning of the swim specifically and throughout the race. I also have to work on handling negative aspects.

Event comments:

This is a great race. I plan on doing it every year!

This year it was meant as training for my Iron-distance race on May 15. I'm not happy with my results, but very glad I raced. It was definitely a learning experience. I wish it had been organized earlier in the season.

Great job mate!!  Although it didn't go exactly as planned, it was still a good race and some good experience before your IM.  Thankfully a few extra minutes in transition at IM wont make or break you.

Riding 180km with a flat tire though...now that wouldn't be advisable.

Buen hecho Felix! Look at it this way, it was a real test of the little things - transitions, GI issues - that you might have to deal with next month. Take those lessons to heart and get it straightened out before the big race

Doesn't sound like you're sweating it too bad, but lets put this in perspective.  You had no taper, you had a flat, and you beat last year's time by 5 mins!!!!!  That's not even to mention the 100k bike and the 4300 m swim.  Felix - you kicked ass.

Very interesting about the pacing.  I'm nowhere near doing IM distances and pacing, so I don't know what to say there.  It makes sense to me that if you consistently train in an endurance type zone without any higher HR work, then that it would be difficult to approach that anaerobic threshold.  The body is trained for going and going and going, but not necessarily trained to rid itself of the lactic acid etc....but again....I'm not anywhere near the distances that you can crank out, so I don't know too much in this area.

It also sounds like your race was a great mental test for you.  In mid-swim you had to make a pace change, you had to deal with a crappy T1 spot, the decisions surrounding a flat.  Despite all this, you cranked out a great run.  I think all your decisions were spot on and very good decisions.  You rocked.  Congrats on a great performance Felix!!!
