Anyone doing the Ruskin race this weekend?  I finally bit the bullet and registered.  I don't know why i put it off for so long.  Anyone do this race before?

I'll be there.  I've never done it before and only did one race last year (well, I did another sprint race in 2002) , this being my second race I hope is well run.  I do know that the run takes place on the beach (read: sand), so remind me not to kill my legs on the bike.

C Ya there.  I'm the guy with the purple Trek Hilo and a silver Mitsubishi Outlander.

Let's try and get together and maybe plan some joint training - I see youre from Riverview, I live at FHawk, where we can do practice tris early on weekends (swimming at the pool (set any distance), riding around Boyette (14.5mi) and running on FH Blvd (set any distance).  Best thing, people leave our stuff alone. It'll be great Laughing if we could turn this into an event...???

We can definately get together to train.  This will be my second tri ever so hopefully i got better at swimming scince the last one.  I'll be the only 6 foot tall filipino out there... can't miss me!  But yeah most definately, we should plan some training together...  i do all my brick work at Flatwoods but would be willing to try out FH.

My wife will be doing this race and I will be there supporting her and the rest of you. I live about 5 miles from the park. It is a nice place to have a race but as far as I know this is only the second triathlon ever held at this park. The first was the Pirates Cove (Olympic distance) which was August 2008. I did not do this race but supported a friend that did. Overall I was not impressed with the organization at the Pirates Cove race. However, it was not part of the Publix series and I hear very good things about the Publix races. My friend said the swim at the Pirates Cove race was very shallow and you could stand up at anytime if needed. I do not know if that will be the same for this race Saturday or not. My wife hopes it will be the same! I suspect the out and back portion will be shallow but that also depends on the tide. I have not looked at the tidal charts. The bike should be fast. Just be careful of the speed bumps within the park. I heard they are making an effort to get riders around the speed bumps safely. There was a bad crash during the Pirates Cove race due to a speed bump. The run is not on the beach but is off road (trails) in some sections. So there might be sand.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have other questions. I might be able to answer them.
Good luck!

I believe they have removed the speed bumps.

Actually they had a tri here back in the early 90s.  I did it when I was a teenager living in Apollo Beach (just down the road)

sounds challenging, and exciting...
shallow water = rather swim it than run knee deep water and kill the hams
bumpy roads (?) = just push yer butt as far back as if MTBing downhill
trail run = doesn't get more challenging than XCountry

yeehaw!

The water was shallow w/o a doubt, most people, including self, ended up running a good portion of the swim.  The road was pretty smooth, I was concerned though with the turn markers (was that sand???), then a few hairpin turns that were real tight.  The run was on trails but mostly packed about 1/2 was on asphalt.

Not sure the organizers had it under control, and maybe next yr the race should start on the high tide.  There was a lot of confussion at the awards, this caused the kids race to be further delayed - geez, they're our future triathletes. Sponsors had booths but i missed some participation from them - maybe it was because of the low turnout.  Next year, I might pick another race, but this one is so conveniently close to home....

My wife had a great race. Oddly enough the swallow water allowed her to swim more (so she says). Being able to touch the bottom gave her confidence (not sure I would want to touch the bottom after the stingray attack). She came out of the water feeling good, had a solid bike, and ran the fastest 5K of her life. Overall, I would say it was a good event. The kids race was a little unorganized but my kids did not know that. They had a great time. And it is hard to complain when they feed you so well. I have never been at an event that even came close to that spread.

Congrats to all!

Does anyone know where to find the official results and maybe some pics?
I didn't want to sound so whinney above - my apologies for not pointing out the positives of the race.
1. absolutely perfect location w/o a lot of vehicular interruption
2. tabletop smooth water @ 81F

3. super friendly volunteers
4. Thumbs up for the kids race - motivating our kids to tri.

Now, who's doing Sarasota on 6/6?   Let's get together!

Evenolder - I'll be there promptly on Sat AM, no need for me to drive 1.5 hrs to pickup the packet,  I'll be the guy on the blue/purple Trek Hilo with 650 wheels.

Evenolder: nice meeting ya.  I saw your results, that's great!

I didn't get the placing I was shooting for but I am a better swimmer than runner and my pistons were done by T2, oh well.  40-44 1:28:24

I could swear I passed about 20-25 people on the bike, but I put almost 10 more mins on R2 than R1, and a lot of those bikers I passed were saying bye bye to me on R2.  That didn't feel good.

I see that you also bring a pit crew (family) to the races.  We should plan to hang out after the next race.  My boy is 7 and daughter 11.  -She always crosses the finish line with me, he's the one running around and wanting to tri with me.  I will start training them both for the post TRI kid's races.

Next scheduled race for me is Morton Plant (7/12), then Publix Ft deSoto and then Cypress Gardens and I'm done to focus on 1/2 marathon and OLYMPIC distance in 2010.  Hope to c u 'round.

Ah, since both you and Boom are entering races as Clydesdales, I may change my category to that.  Im just over 185 - I was hoping to be 180 but it didn't happen.  That's down from 220 so I am not complaining.

Cool canary yellow ride (oops, I mean Ferrari - LOL).  Boom - who started this thread from Riverview is looking for a local Cervelo dealer, maybe you can point him in the right direction.

Dude, I'm a seller, not a buyer.  You're BS ing me.  LOL
In fact, I trained very little in May and can tell my BMI decreased. But thax for the compliment.

I realize that the guy who took 5th place was less than 5% stronger than me.  I'm putting it all on the line for Morton Plant Tri - July 12 - c ya'll there!

Plug your numbers into your category and see how much (or little) you need to improve.  for your calves, i suggest a product you can buy at AJ"s (it hink they also have at Trek on MCDill - it is called "something LEGS"  it's a red GU-like packet with a few caps inside - I suggest you try it.

OK - It's called SPORTLEGS.  Buy 2-3 of the trial packs and give them a shot.  I am working on a similar formulation but I can't put it out there just yet.

I wonder why they shorten the run down so much... 1.7 miles just seems a little lame.  Don't get me wrong, I hate the run as much as the next guy, but that seems a little short.

Gomes, are you referring to R1 when they cancelled the swim at Sarasota? or is this the dist for the Run at another event?

Sarasota (6/7) turned into a Du - 2mi R/13mi B/3.1mi R

No, just that the Publix Ft Lauderdale Sprint is 700, 10, 1.7.  That just seems like a strange run distance.

Guess I should've specified the Ft L part.
