So this is one of those silly "what would you do" posts, but it seems I need to send my Garmin 305 in for repairs (water got inside after a really wet roadrace and it's just over 1 year old, out of the warantee). Would you:

Get it fixed for $80

Buy a new one for $160

Buy the 405 for $250

Call Garmin's tech support. I've known people who  have gotten free replacements that were just out of warranty.

+1
Give Garmin a call.  Even if it is $80 to fix it's well worth it IMHO.  I love my 305.

My beloved 305 is showing signs of its battery giving up the ghost (over 2 years old, not holding a charge). I'm going to REI with the kiddos and hubby tomorrow to get a 405 for Mother's Day.

The 305 and 405 are different animals. One is for multisport, the other is a single sport device. If you like the multisport functions at all on the 305 you'll be disappointed with the 405.

I'd send the 305 in for repair. The tech support people have some leeway about repair costs, so if it's just out of warranty you can probably get a discounted repair/replacement.

I really only use my Garmin for running. I'll use it for biking for the HR monitor only, as I'm all set with my bike computer on the bike. If the 305 were truly usable for tri's (can't wear it in the water, likely too big to get a wetsuit over when taking it off even if you could wear it in the water, etc.) I'd perhaps use it in races, but for me, it's a running pacer and that's it. And I LOVE it for that - worth every penny for me. The fact that the 405 gives me the same functionality I use now, and is substantially smaller, is a huge plus.

Did you call Garmin or send them an eMail? I sent an eMail and I'm thinking I should just call them.

Also, do you need your receipt? Mine just croaked, and I need to have something done to it, because I'm going nuts without it. What did they require from you?

Call them. Don't call before noon on Monday, because they're swamped then. Mine was over a year old, so I'm not sure what they require for proof of warranty.
