Subject: 15MPH Columbia Ride Sunday May 10 9 AM
Hello from Frederick. Anyone interested in riding the Columbia Triathlon bike course on Sunday, May 10th, at 9 AM? I am an novice ~3 hour triathlete, planning a solo recreational ride in the great weather expected this weekend. I plan to start from Centennial Lake, and ride about 15-16 MPH. Anyone interested in joining this ride? I am sure there will be a lot of folks out this weekend, especially with all the rain lately. Does this site have private messages? ( I am more of an MTBR.com guy....) If you ar einterested, post a note and I'll get some meeting info out on Saturday afternoon.

I'm doing the course tomorrow and then running it on Sunday.  Good luck with the ride.  the little PM symbol is the private message option.

Mom's day, can't.

I did ride it today - or at least part of it.  Lots more people out on it today than last time I rode on it.

Yes, there have been more and more people out there.  I can't make this morning ride tomorrow but should be out there mid - late afternoon.

A couple of days ago, I removed a long piece of molding that stuck out into the road near Folly Quarter Rd.

There is a pile of fresh glass on Triadelphia Mill road on the descent approaching Green Bridge Road.  I'll try to get out there with a broom tomorrow evening.

Enjoy the ride...

If you can do something about that huge hump around mile 9.6 that'd be great.

I rode the course for the first time yesterday and almost wiped out on that thing...guess I gotta be more observant.

Rode it today....the big asphalt hump at 9.6 is marked with a big white "X" now... I still hit it. WOW... tough course.  I am leaving the aero bar off .... I was either climbing at ~ 8MPH or in the drops at 28 for most of the course. I ran the Frederick Half last week in 7:56 pace, but think anything under three hours will be a strong race for me.

For anyone who's raced it before... Is traffic closed off? Or semi-closed off?

I didn't see it on my ride today so I'm thinking:

A) I was going so insanely fast that it wasn't humanly possible for me to see it.
B) Since I rode slightly earlier today, maybe the glass was in a shadow and I missed it.
C) There is fresh paint markings on the course so maybe somebody from the course crew got there with a broom first.

I'm putting my money on C.

Yes - that bump is nasty.  Even marked like they did, it can catch you by surprise if you don't know it's there.  It's right before the Sharp Road intersection.

I haven't raced the course before but having grown up in the area, I've seen parts of many races.  The course is NOT closed but police will try their best to get you through most intersections.

I didn't see the bump or if I did I didn't see it!  Oh wait!!  Yeah I know that bump.  I think I've riden the course so much that I have gotten used to being over on the other side of the road when I get to that portion also its a little smoother in the middle.  THat part of the course is a little like tar and chipped.

The course is Semi-closed off.  Traffic still drives around you but the local area is WELL AWARE of the race that is going on.  If they aren't aware then they aren't from the local area.  The local police are pretty good at controlling the course and the traffic.  I have seen them during the race yell at a lot of drivers that try and get cute and cut around the bikes.

Course is always rough.  I hit a max of around 38 or so on one of the downhills and I think the lowest I got was around 10ish on Green Bridge!

Course definitely not closed off.  I got caught behind one of the slower ladies climbing back up to 108 with a car going her pace next to/behind her.  I had to try and go around on the shoulder to avoid hitting her and lost a lot of steam climbing.  Only downer to the ride last year (other than having to slow down for the ambulance at the bottom of Triadelphia).
