Subject: Hub / Wheel Help - Mavic Aksium
I was out for a ride yesterday and had one of the machined blocks that attach the spokes to my hub crack. The crack was bad enough that I heard it make a big pop, and it's physically deformed enough to where it will never hold the spoke again. My wheel is a Mavic Aksium. I don't think the it would be cost effective to repair the hub, as it would take some welding and machining. However, all the internals, spokes, and rim are in fine shape. Is it possible / reasonable for a do-it-yourselfer to get a new OEM (or equivalent) Aksium hub and rebuild the wheel? Any suggestions on where to find one?

I've ordered a new wheel, but I'd kind of like to play around and get this one working again.

Aksium hubs can be had decently cheaplpy on ebay. It would be a fun project.

Re-lacing a wheel yourself, if you've never done it before, can be quite a daunting task. You have to make sure the dish is correct, and that the wheel is true laterally and round vertically.

My next project (among many) is to build a set of wheels myself.
