Master 1436 Wilmington | Subject: Ok done 4 sprint tri`s Next step up Hi I have done 4 tri`s now some easy and some moderate and I am still a newbie. I am really considering doing the 70.3 ironman Augusta. My swimming is my best discipline and always finish in the top 100 overall and my biking I finish middle of the road overall and my running still sucks(but 4 mins faster than my first and second tri). I know what you going to ask if I am out there to place or just finish and I just want to do my best and finish under 5 hours( as a goal) but to finish none the less. Can someone either give me a honest reality check or should I just go for it. |

You still have 4+ months to train for Augusta, which should be sufficient if you've been training consistently. It might be nice to do an oly first as an intermediate step, but not necessary. |

Master 1356 | Subject: RE: Ok done 4 sprint tri`s Next step up You need to use the training tracking blog on BT so we can see what you're doing. Based on your latest race report I'd say you should continue to work on building a base for your current level. Are you following a plan? |

The difference in difficulty of a sprint vs. a HIM is huge. I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't go for it. But doing four sprints doesn't reveal much information in terms of your fitness. I can say that doing a HIM in under 5 hours is very difficult especially if its your first. |

Expert 774 | Subject: RE: Ok done 4 sprint tri`s Next step up I personally know two guys who have gone < 5 hours in a HIM (one is my coach), but they have years of experience. I don't know anyone who has gone < 5 hours on his first HIM. Maybe you'll be the one. What are your individual split times for the event, i.e., 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 run? To break 5 hours, you basically have to do the swim in < :30, the bike in under 2:30 and the run in under 2:00, consecutively. Edited by greyg8r 2009-05-13 10:43 PM |

Um ok watching the White Lake half and saw folks finishing just under 5 hours and not killing themselves I figure 5 hours could be a good target. After the above posts I am now thinking just finish and try under or right at 6 hours |

After the above posts I am now thinking just finish and try under or right at 6 hours In my second season I decided to try a HIM (and only one to date) and figured I would be in the 5:15-5:30; even if everything fell apart, I knew I would go under 6:00. During the same season I had a 2:25 (equiv - 2:20 with a short swim) OD and 1:13 sprint and was in pretty good shape. However, when race day arrived I ended up crossing the line in 6:07; well off my goals. As someone mentioned earlier, I would try an Oly first and hold off on the HIM for a year (or at least wait to make your decision until you finish the Oly). Good luck, Shane |

Come back here with some numbers and we can have an honest discussion. Until then, don't let a bunch of people who know next to nothing about you talk you out of your goals. FWIW, I can think of a probably dozen or so guys that I race with locally that went well under 5:00 in their first half. I can name a couple that went <4:20 (although they are very fast short course guys). I was shooting for 4:45 in my first half and ended up surprising the hell out of myself and doing 4:35, so it can happen if you put in the training. |

Carrollton, TX | Subject: RE: Ok done 4 sprint tri`s Next step up Well to put it in perspective, not including transitions, you'll have to go ~1:35/100m on the swim, ~21mph on the bike for 56 miles, and then run sub 8:45 minute miles for the half mary. That's approximate for a 5 hour HIM. A 6 hour HIM is much more manageable, you could probably go around 2:00/100m, 19 on the bike, and around 9:15-9:30 miles on the run. Any time added in one leg needs to be made up elsewhere. Not to mention transitions, so you'll probably need to be a bit faster than I roughly estimated. |
