Subject: Power Tap wheel option
My power tap on my training wheel is dying both the hub and CPU. The hub drops out and gives me --- and it seems like the torque doesn't stay zeroed right as power numbers go really strange at times. CPU keeps locking up and I lose my ride data. Its annoying. I can upgrade at a significant discount to new one thinking of getting the SL+.

One issue that is confusing is my Zipps are wired and aren't upgradeable at the discounted price. To buy the new hub for the Zipp is ridiculously expensive. It would mean having both the wired harness on my bike for my Zipps and then just the other cradle for the wireless training wheel.

Now the question is what type of wheel to get. For $100 I can get Mavic Open Pro which is what I currently have as training wheel..okay, heavy sort of ugly and utility type wheel. Otherwise I can get the hub and have someone build a wheel for me.

All three of my bikes tri, road and cross all have same wheel set Mavic  Aksium with bladed spokes. My understanding is you can't use bladed spokes on power tap wheel.

What type of wheel would you recommend?  Ideally not to expensive but maybe nicer that Open Pro.

I have the velocity deep V's and while I've only had it since last december,, I'm very happy with it.. I heard the same thing about the bladed spokes since that's what I was looking at also

Don't have any idea about the rear race wheel.. Unless you feel comfortable putting a disc cover on with your 404 front?

I have nice power tap race wheel (Zipp 404s) so all I'm looking for is training wheel.

I use my powertap on all rides so it's in a 32 spoke Mavic Open Pro.  I'll probably pick up a wheel cover at some time for flat races.  Extra weight during training just makes you stronger...  Then again, watts are watts regardless of how heavy your bike is.

I have a SL+ built in  into the Deep V's which is a perfectly acceptable training wheel.  One of the questions I was asked when getting it set up was if I wanted bladed spokes or not.  I didn't get them as my front wheel don't have bladed.  Wheelbuilder did mine so you may want to ask if you really can't have bladed spokes.

Silly question but have you tried replacing the batteries in the head unit and hub?  I was having the -- issue and replacing the batteries fixed it.

I agree it sounds like hub batteries... but seems a little obvious since you've been training with power for a while now.

I'm getting ready to sell my wired '07 PT Pro laced to a DT Swiss R1.1 wheel. I wanted durability above all, that plus a wheelcover and I have no complaints.
