Hi, I am training for my first event in August (the Danskin Tri) and I am so happy to have found this site. The training plans are really easy to read and the articles and advice are very positive (they give me hope!)

I am having some issues with transitioning from my inside club work outs (spin class, running on a treadmill) to outside. When I run I just can't seem to control my breath and start getting side stitches and when I bike my knees start to hurt (nothing like that happens in the class I take so maybe it is my bike...)and am wondering if its just me or have other people had this same problem. I can do an hour spin class and run 3 miles on a treadmill no problem (maybe I can convince Danskin they should move inside )

Would like to get together with another beginner to train if anyone is in the north seattle area wanting the same let me know.

If your knees hurt on your bike, ( is it road or mtn? ), you should probably get your setup checked out by a good bike shop. If you have saddle out of alignment, etc, this can put added stress on your joints while cycling.

Regarding the running, that's my weak leg ( haahaa ) of the Tri so I'll let others post their advice on that.

Welcome to the club!

Welcome to the T-Spot!  As far as running, a treadmill will set the pace for you and takes a little less effort to use compared to outdoor running.  Check your pace when you are outside and you may find that you are running at a little faster pace than you think you are.

Hi, Welcome to the club!

As far as running outside, we all tend to go a little faster. My advice to you is to purchase a heart rate monitor. You can decide on your max hr by using it on the treadmill. There are plenty of articles out there on how to set your max hr and what percentage of that to use during training. I've trained for two marathons using the monitor and believe me it works. Good luck.

Welcome Tashana!

I have the same issue with running outside. I just bought a heart rate monitor like another user suggested, so I'm anxious to give it a try to see if that helps. I'm a terrible runner to start with, so any help for me is great!

Good luck with your training!
