Today arguably the greatest cyclist of all time and definately the greatest American cyclist annouced his retirement.

While next best American cyclist has been banned for 2 years for blood doping. I for one really admired everthing Tyler did as a cyclist and have followed his case hoping that he would be cleared.  I don't mean that he would get off by some loophole but there would be some proof that he was innocent.  It appears that is not possible and really tarnishes all of his accomplishments.

he had it on for the entire tour. I estimated that 75% of stage winners had it on.

Basso an Lance became friends prior to last years tour because Basso's mom was underging treatment for cancer. Basso became involved in the Livestrong bracelet wearing as a result of that.

As I heard someone editorialize on ESPN radio this morning:

Lance proclaims himself to be the most tested athlete in all of sports.  If that's true, then he's either the best cheat in the world or he is so dominant that he could beat cheaters.

I choose to believe the later.

As for Tyler Hamilton, I'll never forget the 2003 Tour when he finished with a broken collar bone.  I was doing RAGBRAI and kept thinking to myself, "I can't imagine what it would be like to do this with a broken bone."  Doper or not, it took some severe intestinal fortitude to go as long as he did with a bum shoulder.  This may tarnish his record and reputation, but the guy still has guts.

Tyler Hamilton lost his arbitration hearing on the doping issue he has been facing and a two year ban is now in effect for him. That's a sad day..........either the next best hope for American cycling was exposed as a cheat or he got screwed. Don't know, not my place to judge him, but that's sadder than Armstrong retiring. I think he just wants to go one year longer than Hineault, merkyx and Induran (sorry for the spelling massacre) who all retired at 32 and he'll retire at 33. A legend retiring isn't sad.......................a legend retiring with no one to have to look to the future is what's truly sad. I always thought that Tyler was the heir apparent when Lance retired, but not now. So which American cyclist will step up. It's a short tradition but with Lemond, Armstrong and Hamilton...........................who's next??
