Subject: New guy in VA (35 and 280lbs)

Over the last 10 years I have gained about 50 - 60 lbs.  I now have an active (very active) 6 year old daughter and she told me my tummy was really big!  The other motivating factor was our spring break cruise that showed me like a whale in the pictures.  I have been eating right for the last 3 weeks and have already dropped 10 pounds.  I have started to workout; however, am struggling fitting it in everyday.  I found this site and since I was a teenager have wanted to run a triathalon.  I want to run a sprint triathalon!  Any suggestions for a beginner like me on which race to run?  I am willing to travel nationally.  I would like to run this around my 36th b-day in January 2010 and am trying to train towards that date.

Any advice, words of wisdom or words of encouragement is always appreciated....

Ryan

Welcome to BT and welcome to triathlon. Congratulations on starting out. It is a lot of fun. There are a lot of events in VA, but you are not going to find too much in January because of the weather. Not sure about the rest of the country. My only advice is to start slow to ensure you don't burn out or get hurt. In you profile if you select your state as VA you will start to see a Virginia area which is a good place to look and ask about things locally. There are a lot of active groups all over the state. Additionally there is also a Clydesdale section for us guys over 200 lbs can feel at home with others. Lots of good info and people way more knowelegeable then me here.

check out setupevents.com as I think they have a series of races in Virginia. January is not a month where you would typically see triathlons... though you should find plenty of running races, as the winter is a popular time for those!

Good luck- this site is full of great information... there are many who have been in your shoes and can offer advice and encouragement.

You've already overcome the first obstacle... getting started!

Ryan,

Congrats and welcome ! I also am brand new to this sport and like you had always wanted to do a triathlon. I have a good friend/Mentor who started doing these about 4 yrs ago and does Ironman tri's now. I weighed about 265 and was 42 back 6 weeks ago when i decided enough was enough. I now weigh 247 and eat right every day. I am scheduled for my first event in August, a sprint. Good luck !!

Welcome... I'm getting started here too, well since March anyway.  I understand the issues with finding the time to fit everything in.  I think the secret is to realize that you can shift workouts around to better fit your schedule but make sure you get them in and don't fall behind.  If you haven't already, take a look at the workout schedules here on BT.  I'm following the Original 13 Week Sprint to Tri.  Where are you in Virginia?  There is a very strong BT tri 'scene' in the DC area and we are trying to replicate that in the Hampton Roads area.  Good luck!

Welcome, Ryan!!  What part of Virginia are you in?

Setupevents has several tris in Virginia.  Richmond Multisports has about five tris, mostly in the Richmond area.

I am in the Midlothian area near Richmond.  I also have an office in Herndon, VA so I am up there 1 - 2 days per week.  Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement.  I need to head to the gym!

Welcome Ryan....from a fellow newbie. I have only been on here a week or so. This is a GREAT place...with very helpful people. I'm kinda in a similar situation as you describe...plus most of 20 years! But we've got a great resource here, just take it all one step at a time.

Good Luck and keep at it!

Ryan,

You are definitely on the right track. There is a great sprint in Midlothian near the end of the season at ACAC fitness center on Robious. It is called the Rchmond sprint and is in Oct. If you follow the plans that BT has you could be ready in time. Remember it is all about finishing. Most of us just want that feeling of accomplishment after training so hard to compete in a tri.

God speed,

Dano
