Subject: road bike vs. mountain bike times
Did my first sprint tri today on my trusty yet heavy Cannondale mountain bike with slick tires. I didn't do too bad, in fact I was only 3 or 4 minutes behind our age group winners....so if I had an entry level road bike and put some more serious time in the saddle, would it be realistic to close that gap a little by a minute or two?

post the distance of the triathlon and your exact time.

To give you an idea: I did my first 4 on a mtb.  the courses were the same since it was a Trilogy race:

MTB (this is a cannondale full suspension on mountain bike tires)
1st 43 min
2nd 42 min
3rd 39 min - i actually practiced a little more riding

Tri bike
1st 28 min - this was 1 month after getting my tri bike, only had about 300 miles in the saddle

with slicks your mtb times will look better for sure.  curiuos myself.....
