Subject: Beginner Triathlete Wish List
I'm super duper newbie and don't know a thing about any of this. That's not scaring me away from giving it a shot though! I know enough from my dad, who is a runner, that I'm supposed to not buy the first cute pair of Nikes that I see, but rather I'm to get fitted for running shoes at a running store. I'm clueless about everything else - bikes, swimming gear, HRMs, etc. Until I'm properly equipped, most of my running will be done on my treadmill at home + swimming in the lap pool at the gym as well as stationary bike at gym.

Help me make a shopping list....

As long as this is a "wish" list, add a Cervelo P3 with Dura Ace components, Zipp 909 wheel in the back and 404 wheel in the front.

A very good list...Only other thing is a winning lottery ticket so I can quit working...lately it just seems to get in the way of my personal life...(like preparing for triathlons)

Hey,

I was in your position back in November, my first Tri is Sunday and I'm about to flip out I'm so stoked...that said, here is what I would suggest, and as I said, I'm no expert.

A decent bike.  I started this journey with a $99 dollar variety mountain bike, it wasn't until I was able to acquire a decent aluminum road bike with Shimano intergrated gear did I realize just how big a junker I had.

With the nice weather approaching you can probably get along without buying a trainer for your bike until fall.

I also now swear by having an HRM.

Swimming, unless you have a history of swimming, is harder than you would think, so the more pool time you can get the better

and madcow is now one of my heros, he became an ironman last weekend, and his words of wisdom are golden!

Welcome to our world, and good luck in your tri future!

I just need more sponsors, so I don't HAVE to work to afford this sport...

Get some good running shoes - have them properly fitted.  Other than that, a large portion of your training can be accomplished simply by having the motivation to do it.  You'll want a tri-suit so you don't have to worry about changing during your tris, but you don't HAVE to have all the stuff that the rest of us have to have fun.  We're a bunch of nutcases, and may have taken training to new, incomprehensible, levels.

That being said, pick up a Triathlete magazine, or Inside Tri, a book like Joe Friel's Triathlete's Training Bible or Swim, Bike, Run and you'll have a great start.

The essentials - swimsuit, goggles, running shoes, a bike (preferably with gears), and helmet.  Most of the rest can be acquired as you go along and decide how much you want to get into the sport-- and how much you want to spend.  Fancy equipment and clothes don't make the triathlete, though let's face it, it is fun to buy new toys.   I think my first extra purchases over the course of a couple of years were a sports watch, cyclecomputer, a new bike seat, aerobars, bike shorts, clipless peddles and bike shoes, and most recently a heart rate monitor.  I'm now considering purchase of a wetsuit, primarily because I'll be doing a half IM in September.  Good luck and have fun with your training and shopping.
