I have a question for you guys. In a race that does not assign rack space by race number, is it "wrong" to rack your bike on a rack other than the one provided for your age group? I run in to this at almost every race my daughter does. We get there early, 60-90 minutes before race start. My daughter sets up her transition area very carefully and then we head out. We always come back to check her set-up right before we head down for the start and at nearly every race her stuff is movedor pushed aside. Because her age group has fewer participants, this is usually done by people in other age groups that arrived too late to get a spot on their own age group rack(I know, I have watched nearby several times to see who it was that was so inconsiderate of another person's belongings). One time some guy racked his bike literally on top of my daughters bike, the handlebars were overlapped. Because my daughter was out of the water first, she really struggle to get her bike out from under this guys bike. Last season was her first doing adult races and we looked at every race as a learning experience. But I am not feeling so generous this year and I am wondering what is the best way to deal with this kind of stuff. I have taught my daughter to respect other people's property and I think that she deserves the same respect.

Yes, it is discourteous. I hang out at my bike and stake out my spot.
Then again, I'm 6'0 and 200lbs. Not too many people will try and push in on my turf....
I suggest just talking to them before they do their set up.

The best thing to do is sit on your stuff. Get there early. Rack your bike as close to the bike out as possible, set up your gear, taking as much space as needed (not more, not less). Grab a chair or a nice comfy spot on the ground near your bike and hangout until it's time to head to the water. You took the time to get there early, you shouldn't have to move because someone got there late. If, after you and the people around you have set up and you are able to make room for someone, by all means make room, but you shouldn't be forced out, especially by someone in another AG. Chances are, they are looking for a better spot than their AG's rack...my .02

I agree with Possum. I know people who are discreet. No names and no clues left!

Yeah, I guess hanging close by is probably the best thing to do. But my daughter gets rather anxious on race mornings and needs to walk around, see who is there that she knows and do a little swim warm-up before the race start. I think she would freak out if she had to hang around the transition area for that long. Oh well, maybe things will be different this season(can you tell I'm feeling a bit more generous this monrning!)
