Subject: How quiet is a computrainer?
I am looking at getting a computrainer, but am a little concerned about how quiet it is. The ideal spot for it is in my workout room which is directly above my kids ( 3 & 5 that go to bed early) bedroom. I lift weights (no banging) and use the eliptical after bedtime, but the treadmill is "daytime use only". I keep my cyclops mag trainer in the basement because it sounds like a jet taking off. For the computrainer I would want to take advantage of the workout room which has the computer and television, but if it sounds like a traditional trainer the "time of use" contraints would be a big factor in my decision. Can anyone comment on the relative noise (treadmill, eliptical, television, 747 on take off, etc.) of a computrainer?

I think the CT is pretty quiet compared to my other trainier.  Not the 747 taking off type of noise but can't tell you exactly how really loud it is.

I have ridden one. They are not as loud as a cycle ops mag trainer that I had.

I have one of these now....

Tacx Fortius - much more entertaining and just as useful or more than the computrainer in my humble opinion.

The only thing I like better about the computrainer is the spin scan... where you can display the consistency of the circles that you are producing.

We have one and it is pretty quite. Much quieter than Cyclops trainer. It's more like elliptical trainer level (the tire on the roller makes the noise) and less than Cyclops Mag trainer. You don't really need a TV up loud to hear it while on the CompuTrainer.

We're using two CompuTrainers in our living room with people in the apartment below. They can't hear them at all and the house is from 1931, so pretty thin walls...

The majority of the noise will come from vibrations, so a good carpet or even better a trainer mat under the bike and you make it very quite.

Most of the noise from my computrainer comes from me screaming in pain from the hills

Overall, I agree with the above posts that its pretty quiet, but its the only trainer that I have ridden, so I have nothing to compare it to. I doubt it would be enough to wake your kids though.

Related question: how pleased are you with your computrainer? Would you buy it again? This has been on my wish list for a while now and may be my birthday present to myself.

This is a tough question that I have asked myself many times. What I would really love is like a $500 accurate (aka not iBike) power meter that I could use on all of my bikes without a dedicated wheel and share with the wife.

I find that longish trainer sessions on the Computrainer are way easier mentally to do than on a regular trainer. The SpinScan feature is cool for dialing fit and seeing just what happens to your stroke and power output with changes. It’s easy to change bikes, just like any other trainer. The courses and workouts you can do are great. If you don’t ride outdoors during the nasty weather months, it’s a great way to stay bike fit or even increase your fitness during the off months. I’m a gear junky, I do use the CompuTrainer here and there (I ride outside year round, rain and snow included), so ya I’d likely get one again.

I'd buy it again. Its a great tool. Its fairly easy to do long rides. It WILL increase your power and speed if you use it regularly. 'Nuff said.

One consideration is the tire on your bike that you are using on the CT. When we use our CT, it's very quiet.....a friend brings their bike over and the tread must be quite different and it makes quite a bit of noise (it's not a nubby tire, but something is different....). I would recommend getting one of those training tires.
