Subject: Nautica NYC Triathlon - Do I need a wet suite?
Hi, Im a first timer at doing a Tri so please help me understand. I am going to be in the NYC Triathlon in July and wanted to know if I should get a wet suite or if a race suit is ok for the swim as well. I know how delightful the Hudson River is, so any guidance and words of wisdom about the tri that you have are more than welcome!

Thanks!
Megs

You probably don't "need" one. The water isn't that cold and, with the current, it is a fast swim, usually; the cleanliness of the water isn't really an issue either, IMO. It's no worse than plenty of other bodies of water that people race in.
On the other hand, you're going to have a long T1 anyway because of the distance from swim exit to transition, so the few extra seconds you'll spend getting a wetsuit off won't hurt your overall time much. It will make you faster and...you never know...there might be jellyfish again.

I wouldn't buy one just for this event, but if you have one, you might as well wear it.

I don't own one at the moment, and was considering buying it so, thanks for the advise. Do you know if there is a place that rents Triathlon Wetsuits?

I think I saw a link on the official website, nyctri.com, actually.

Not a necessity, but I'd wear one.  I did last year.  The water isn't cold, but you'll conserve a lot more energy in both increased buoyancy and your body not losing as much heat to the water.

x2 on the tide.  Early waves were zipping down the Hudson (which wasn't THAT dirty), but my wave went off when it was slack tide, or close to it.  By the time I came around on the bike less than an hour later, the moored boats in the river had spun around as the tide reversed.

Good luck and enjoy it!

If you're considering renting versus buying, it might be beneficial to buy one since the cost of renting for 2 races could be about the same price as buying one on sale.

Jack Rabbit Sports (http://www.jackrabbitsports.com/) definitely rents wetsuits.  I believe the cost is $75.

Also, I know that Xterra is having a sale on most of the 2008 stock right now.

In addition, the website http://www.trijungle.com/is having a sale of 20% off with coupon code SUMMERSALE until June 23rd.

Hope this helps!

You can rent from JackRabbit and then if you decide to buy, they will apply the rental cost to the suit.
