So my first race is coming up in six weeks.  I don't own any tri shorts or cycling shorts.  I'm going to wear a wetsuit for the race.  How waterproof are wetsuits?  If I have a pair of running shorts on under the wetsuit, will they get soaked?  What about a shirt?  What I have is fairly water-resistant, but definitely not waterproof.  My shirt and shorts I was considering wearing are not form-fitting, but they aren't exactly baggy either.  Will they even fit under a wetsuit?

What's everyone's advice.  Can I get through the first race without shelling out more dough for shorts and a shirt?

If you can, maybe just buy a pair of jammers and race in those?

A wetsuit is, well, wet.  My limited experience out practicing OWS even for short periods is that my wetsuit does not keep anything really dry.  Shorts and top were wet within a few minutes of swimming.

My suggestion on gear is check out the REI clearance sale (if you have one near you) towards the end of this month.  I picked up a pair of tri shorts for ~$20 last year on super clearance.  I would say worth the investment over a pair of baggy shorts.

Wetsuits are supposed to let water in.  If you want waterproof, you'd need a drysuit.

You can probably get running shorts in a wetsuit. It'll be a little bunched up, but I think you could make it work.  It would probably be more comfortable to get a pair of tri shorts on clearance.  I got a pair recently on Sierra Trading Post for about $30.  I also hate biking in running shorts, so it's worth the cost to me.

The second you walk into freezing cold water with your wet suit on, you will never have to ask that question again.  The water seeps in immediately.  The whole idea is that a layer of water gets in between the suit and your body, where you  body heat warms it up, to keep you warmer.

Lots of people, (tri, surfers, scuba) actually pee in the suit for extra warmth.  Hey that's no more gross than blowing your nose like a construction worker while biking.  (I got sprayed just last weekend)

^^^ agreed. Its not waterproof. Its the opposite.

If you are in this sport and making a go of it, just suck it up and buy some tri-shorts. Its not a big expense at the end of the day. You dont need a $200 tri-suit, but run of the mill tri-shorts are relatively cheap in the relative sense.
