Subject: iPhone Navigation on Bike

Thought I would poll folks here and see if this is possible and how I would/could go about it. If its not possible as of today, then here's a million $ idea for some developer (maybe not million but at least thousands)! I am getting a new 3Gs iPhone next Friday. Here's what I'd like to do. Mount it up on the aerobars so I can see it at all times (I know there are bike mounts out there already, just got to find one to fit my profile design bars or rig something up). Here's the part I don't know, I'd like an app which will allow me to create a desired bike route on my Mac, probably using waypoints, and then save that route and put it on the iPhone and have it shown to me as I ride while using the GPS to track my progress on the route. Don't necessarily have to have turn-by-turn directions but need to be able to see where  am so I can make all of the turns as they appear on the map. Is this technology already out there for the iPhone? I did a quick search in the App store on iTunes but I'm not sure if any of them can do this. Thanks for any info anyone can share!

I've used GPS Kit to download routes and the Maps app that comes with the iPhone. I see a future app that is a cycle computer and navigation. Check BT at the same time.

I use an index card taped to the bars...

I do carry my phone in my jersey, however (in a ziploc bag) in case I get stranded, and I did once use the built-in map application when I wanted to change my route on the fly.

The biggest issue is the battery life.  Leaving the phone on that that with the program running and using the screen will eat up the battery quick.

I use the free Runkeeper app to track all my rides and runs.  I don't mount it when I ride, but I just stick it in my bag.  You have to leave it on, but one thing you can do to really help with the battery life is turn the screen brightness way down.

Check out mapmyrun.com .  They have an iphone app that tracks your run/ride.  I've never used it, but I've seen the ads.  btw, if you sweat like I do you will need to mount the iphone far away from your aero bars.

trailguru works pretty well, but it will only tell you where you've been, not where to go.

I also use runkeeper, and I really like it.  After you are done with your ride it uploads it to their site, and you can enter notes and track all your rides/runs/hikes.  I have been on a 2 hour ride with the ipod playing, and the phone was only half drained.  If you don't need to see the display it helps if you turn it off.
