Currently on a Trk 7.3 hybrid thinking of moving to a road bike -not a tri specific bike as I ride quite a few hills around my home and don't see  me doing much more than sprints ,oly (60 y/o beginner)

Assuming fit will be primary concern ---what brand and even model may be best suited for 5'11' @ 265 lb assume alum will be better suited than carbon ??

Thanks

Hey there, I'm pretty close to your specs. I'm 6'0 268, but I'm working on it. I tried a few aluminum bikes before I bought my carbon. For me, the aluminum would not support the weight. The frame would flex too much and the bike would not shift properly. So, I had to go with a carbon.

I originally bought a Masi Grand Corsa which was an aluminum bike with carbon forks and seat stay. But, like I said, it wouldn't shift correctly because of the weight. But, I love the way that Masi felt. So, I had to take it back. I went with a Scott CR-1, that bike was flawless, no problems with shifting during the year I had it. But it just didn't fit right and didn't feel like the Masi. So I sold that bike, took a bike hit, and bought a Masi 3VC Carbon bike. This bike is awesome. I know this is a lot of info, but thought I'd share my experience. Hope this helps.

Take care,

Hi there.

Thought I let you know my experience in this respect. I have a 2008 Felt F85, which is an alloy bike with carbon fork, mostly shimano 105, ultegra rear.

I simply could not be happier with this bike.. It is rock solid. I was 320lb when I started riding it, and it was fine in all respects. Have put about 7000 km on it and it is as good as the day I bought it.

I have fitted a stubby riser head stem to bring the handlebar up and back, also have DEDA aero bars.. I tend to ride aero as much as possible.

I will probably get a Tri bike at some stage, but for a while this is my weapon of choice.

Carbon Actually works really well for Clydes, actually better then alum or steel. Weighs less and is stronger. Just make sure you get the CF bike from a name brand bike manufacture, not from some off brand. What type of carbon fiber and how it is used to build a bike makes all the difference.

I am about your size and weight and picked a Cervelo RS. The frame fits me well and suited my riding style.

I have a carbon fiber road bike. When I went to carbon from aluminum there was a noticeable difference in stiffness with the carbon being stiffer.  I am 225 now but was around 250 when I got this bike. Mine is a Trek Madone 4.5 you could probably find one for approx $2000 or less.
