My logical thinking said that a good place to do my first tri would be florida. Warm weather and most of all, a flat course. So, I signed up for the Danskin. Got a great price on a hotel, but I just looked to book my flight options and OH MY GOD!!! What happened to affordable flights to Florida? I waffled for a while. Is it worth spending $500 (for husband and I) to go there for a race that I should finish in about an hour? We could drive in about 15 hours, but who wants to do that? Anyway, after a lot of soul searching I am going to do it. I'll be poorer in the bank, but hopefully richer for the experience of completing my first tri.

Personally, I'd drive, and it's not about the money. I'd rather transport my bike than disassemble, pack or ship it, and I'd rather have my own car once I get to the race venue. Plus, you and your hubby get to take in the sights and have a nice chat on the rides. Good luck in your first tri.

It sounds like you'll have a very memorable mini-vacation. How fun!

Have a great race and let us know how it goes.

$250 roundtrip per person is not bad.

15 driving vs 4-5 hours flying = 10 hrs and lust just say your time is worth $15 per hour = $150
15 hours = ~900 miles = ~ 45 gallons of gas = ~$95

So in others words, the trip is cost neutral or close to it.

Try kayak.com to find a better price on flights -- it searches nearby airports and more airlines than the other sites. I've found better deals there than any other site.

I have never heard of kayak.com, but did find a $190 RT! Thanks!

Try Independence Air or Jet Blue.  Both have bargain fares.  I traveled round trip from Washington, D.C. to Ft. Lauderdale for about $150 in January on Jet Blue.  I just flew my mom up to Washington from West Palm Beach for $179 (including all taxes) round trip on Independence Air.  Book yourself through their websites.  I've always found better fares that way than going through intenet travel agencies. Good luck!
