Question for folks who do the LA Tri Club Manhattan Beach ocean swim on Sunday mornings:

Can you confirm that swimming from lifeguard tower 28 to the pier is actually a full mile? I ask because I swam it yesterday and was surprised by my time (28:43), which seemed too fast, given my usual swim times.

Is 28 in front of the big yellow boxy house with green windows?  That's the usual marker.  But no.... it's not a full mile.   They figure by the time you swim out, swim back in, etc.  It's close, but it is short

Not sure about the yellow house, but I'm guessing it was the usual starting point for the 1-mile. Even if it was slightly under a mile, this swim took me ~40 minutes last year, so I'm pretty excited about that. Maybe there was a current...

whatever the distance, that's an awesome improvement!  As for timing OWS, it's hard to compare year to year (other than a big gain in time like yours) because, as you said, there is current.  Sometimes it's with you, sometimes against you, sometimes none
