Swim
Comments: First few hundred meters, I was very nervous, felt like I had the wind knocked out of me - getting used to the water temp, all the splashing, etc. But all in all, I thought I had a really good swim (especially w/o a wetsuit!) What would you do differently?: Uh, swim faster? Draft better? I tried to draft- but people couldn't swim in a straight line, and plus they were faster, so they were gone within a few secs. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: Tough getting clipped in at first. Course was really flat except for a few small climbs. Was going at a pretty good clip the first 13 miles, then the wind hit. Hard. I was reduced to going like 14-15 mph. Ugh. Tried a gel for the first time. Hammer gel raspberry. I didn't feel like it gave me ANY energy though. Definitely need a new saddle. I was dying by the end...and was so glad to get off the bike. What would you do differently?: Get a better bike, heehee. Do more practice w/ wind and hills to get used to biking in different environments. Transition 2
Comments: Socks were really wet from earlier so that was uncomfortable. Also, my top was still soaking wet b/c it was windy and cool- so it didn't dry out too well. Run
Comments: I DIED on the run. Just ran out of gas. Quads started cramping almost immediately. Had to stretch them twice. Legs just wouldn't move. I think I got passed by almost everyone on the course. Walked quite a bit- at every aid station (so about 6-8 times). Plus, stomach started hurting. I was so glad to get done with the run. Saw Wendi and Mike on the run. What would you do differently?: BRICKS, BRICKS, BRICKS. Need to do one per week. I have to get used to running on tired legs. Also, increase run distance. Post race
Warm down: Sat on a bench and tried to catch my breath- drank 2 bottles water. Got food from the tent- pizza, fruit, bread...it was delish! Talked w/ the BT group for a while. Karl broke out some champagne...:) What limited your ability to perform faster: 1. Race experience (only second Oly, and 4th tri overall) 2. My running- coming off foot injuries 3. A bike that's too big for me 4. The fact that I come from a completely non-athletic background. But, hey I'm trying!! Event comments: Hands down, best race I've ever been to. Will definitely do this race again- every year if I can. The volunteers were amazing. With 4,000 race participants, things were a little chaotic and intimidating, but there was such a HIGH level of energy and excitement. The expo was amazing. Every tri-related thing you could ever possibly imagine, was there. If you have the opportunity to do this race, you should. St. Pete is a beautiful place! Last updated: 2005-04-24 12:00 AM

BT party on Saturday night! Wendi organized an awesome pasta dinner, and I got to meet Jeff (JkBostic) and his wife, Chris (coredump), Renee, NYTriGal, Lucy, etc...Earlier in the day, shopped at the expo, drooled over everyone's bikes, checked bike in, saw the swim course and freaked out. Water looked cold and choppy and the course looked really long!
Onto Sunday morning...Got 7 hours of solid sleep. I was amazed! Woke up at 5:15 a.m. Got dressed, drank some water and a banana. Then about an hour later, ate a bagel w/ butter. Bag was already packed and I was ready to go. Barry dropped me off at the race site around 6 am, and came back a little later. We had to be out of the transition area by 7 am, as the pros we're going to be coming in shortly after that.
Arranged transition area, headed over to "Spa Beach" to wait 1 hr 10 minutes before my wave start. Nearly froze to death. It was sooo cold out, and my feet were numb. Found Wendi (G8RSAX) and Sue (Sue7013) and we tried to calm each other down. Saw Mike (G8RLA) and Karl (Motivated) head out on their waves. Freaked out b/c everyone had a wetsuit except me. Met Paulieman (Paul), another BTer as we were waiting for the swim to start.
