You are a MOPer feeling strong at the end of your run.  Do you:

I leave it all out on the course, but if someone at the line happens to be going much slower than my steady (read plodding) pace, they are getting passed. Every second counts when you're trying to beat your last year's time in the same race.

It depends on the situation, if I have been running with someone and fighting it out on the run then I will try and leg it out. If I have been plodding along and had to chose between finishing behind someone or darting in front at the last minute, I'll let them have it. Nobody will remember who finished 549th and 550th and 1 sec won't make or break me.

I leave it all on the course too, but if  I see someone loafing, I find another gear and burn it in!

It's a race, right?  Competition?  So I want to crush my opponent or at least make as good a showing as I can.

Oh, by the way, my opponent isn't the guy I blow past; it's the clock.

I'm with Hawkeye, it's not about who I pass, the last 2-3 minutes I'm going as fast as I possibly can no matter who's in front of me.

crank it in the end, every second counts, and the person in fron of you, you may drop and move up a place

My pace is my pace and if I pass someone at the finish, so be it. That being said, I've been passed a time or two at or near the line, and it doesn't bother me.

Just to clarify, the first 2 choices are the only ones I put in.  The others were "added" (they are kinda funny though).

I have been cruising in for the last year, but now that I'm getting the tiniest bit faster, I'm thinking that nice-guy finish is probably finished. Last year I let an older fella beat me by a couple of seconds because I thought it would be tacky to sprint by him at the end. This year, he'd be toast.

I've always looked at it like I was competing against myself, not the other competitors, so I bring it home as hard as I can. More like stroke play as opposed to match play in golf.
I've done my best times in smaller events where I actually finished closer to the back because the field was made up of better athletes.

Hawkeye's spot on - it's a race, whole point is to cover the distance in the least time (definition of race) whether you pass them 200m ininto the swim or 200m from the tape.  You're out there to get the best time you possibly can, if you've got energy with 500m left, burn it up.

You may even help someone else - if someone passes me near the end of a race I'll dig deep and try to stay with them, so burning past someone could halp them get a PB (f you want to look at altruistically)

It's a race and that is the nature of the beast, to sprint that final 100 meters or so!  If the guy or gal in front of you has no fuel left for a sprint ... too bad.

I'll use every little thing I can to turn it up a notch. Closing in on someone at the end of the race is great motivation to try and shave off a couple more seconds.

The little angel on my shoulder says: Have fun and just race against yourself.

The little devil on my shoulder says: SMOKE’EM ALL!

I listen to the little devil regularly

I won't win anyway, but it certainly feels good

I guess this is a personal decision for most people and also based on a persons race goals (A race, B race, C race etc), but for me....I figure that I've busted my body in training.  If I've still got enough in the tank at the end of the race to have a kick left, use it all up.  I want the tank to be on empty or past empty when I cross that line.  If I happen to pass someone on the way in, so be it.

I go for the finish line photo. Unless I'm following a chick with nice "wobbly bits", then I stay right where I am.

Hey I don't have that many years left...I'm making the most of them!

Hawkeye's spot on: while I am competing against the clock (read: myself), I'm out there trying to be the best triathlete that I can be.  If I pass someone and their fragile ego gets hurt, that's called Collateral Damage...

burn it all duing the race ....then pull that kick from somewhere...it is in there you just mentally have to find it....have done a lot of racing mostly in high school and college ....it does not have to be to pass other but to just better your times....

Here's a pic of some fool trying to pass me at the finish line: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=180&photoid=1078. He shoulda known better than to mess with the best! (ok, actually, I had no idea he was there. I really wanted to keel over about then and was unaware of anything but the fact that in a matter of feet, I would get to stop running.)

I will usually go for it at the finish line, especially if it is someone in my age group. However, in staggered starts or waves the person you are trying to pass isn't even in your wave. I did this in a duathlon and passed a younger guy at the finish line. The photo was great. Last week I tried to catch a guy in my age group about 50 feet from the line. He turned and saw me and barely beat me in. Again, some great photos and friendly competition. Every time I see him we laugh about it.
