I started running in the first third of March. I was doing pretty well. The first two weeks of April I was approaching 20 miles per week, which for me is a whole lot. Well last Monday I woke up sick as a dog and I obviously did not run. I couldn't run the entire week. Saturday was my first day running again. I went for a 16 minute jaunt. I seemed to cover the same distance that I sould have. I didn't run Sunday or today (Monday) but I do plan to do a very easy mile tonight (Monday night) indoors. I am afraid I scrwed up my fitness but maybe I am just paranoid. What do you guys think/will my month of good training go to waste?

It will come back much faster than it took to get to in the first place. I say don't worry about things you can't change. Take it easy and don't push it trying to get back to where you were.

It is better to rest and get better than to push yourself to exercise while you're sick. Listen to your body. Here is a good artilce on dealing with sickness and trainging.

Usually it will take a couple of weeks of absolutely no exercise to really affect your fitness level (this varies for everyone.) So don’t worry that much. Sometimes sick or injury breaks force us to rest and when we resume our training we return stronger

The sickness may have been a result of your body needing a break. DON'T force it, it will come back naturally. Happens to all of us!

Something similar happened to me last week. It was a scheduled recovery week, and my daughter (2 yr old) was sick, so I didn't get much sleep and my training schedule was screwed up all week. Basically, my recovery week became close to a full rest week. I got back on the bike yesterday and went for a run today and I felt great. Rest really makes you stronger. I heard this all the time, but now I really felt it. So don't worry too much about the week off. The forced rest can be beneficial by giving you time to recuperate from all the training.

You'll get back up to where you were in no time at all, just don't push yourself too hard - take it easy. Rest when you are healthy is one thing - forced rest when your body is run down and sick is very different. I am in week 2 of getting back on the saddle after having the flu which knocked me out for about 2 weeks and 3 weeks before that I was out for a week with a cold, so I'm not a happy triathlete to say the least.

So, take it easy and in about a week or so you'll forget you were ever sick! Your fitness will come back to you much faster than you'd expect.

Good luck!

It takes about 3 weeks of absolute no activity to start loosing your base. Remember when you are sick your body goes into "emergency" mode. What you are feeling is your body switching back to "normal". Give your body time. You will be fine.
