Overall Rank = 774/3800
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 24/155
Pre-race routine:

Saturday did a little swim just to get used to the cold water/wetsuit thing. Also biked a little on the main road in front of transition, made several practice runs putting on/taking off shoes while on cobblestones (screwed that up last year). No running, figured did enough walking today anyway.

Saturday evening had a blast of a pasta dinner that GR8 SAX (sorry Wendi, had to do it) set up, got to meet coredump, Lucy and her hubby, Wendi, of course, and her hubby G8RLA94, jlbostik and his wife, motivated, Renee and of course got to see gatorgirl22 again (I know I'm forgetting someone aren't I). anyway, had a great time. NYtrigal popped in later for a visit.

Then off to a terrible, terrible sleep. Race time for me isn't until 8:35 but had to get stuff into transition before 7:00 because that's when they lock it down since the race begins then. Bob and I walked down (~1/2 mile from our hotel) to transition with our stuff at about 5:45 or so and after we put it all down walked back to hotel to relax. Got the kids up about 7:15 after Bob left to go back to the start (his race starts at 7:50) and we walked down to transition area to set them up to volunteer.
Event warmup:

After setting the kids up, my wetsuit and I had to walk ~1/2 mile to the start line and I stretched, put on the wetsuit, and had about 10 minutes to warmup swim before my wave went off.
Swim
  • 30m 8s
  • 1650 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm so used to using my HRM watch that I pressed the wrong button on my IM watch and screwed up the whole thing. Here I am after the gun goes off running into the water pushing buttons helplessly on my watch! Oh, forget it. Kept going (that might explain my 1 minute swim split!) Typical pushing, kicking, elbowing, etc. went on...and then there were the other competitors.(LOL) I was just trying to keep long strokes and draft when I could.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. My arms aren't even tired today, and I was hoping for a faster swim time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Didn't really try to rush this transition. Hips are still too big for the wetsuit (suit still stuck on the hips) but my hips and I both survived it. Then no problem grabbing the glasses (see Jeff, you might as well just put them on!), helmet, then off with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Still gotta whittle on those hips! BRUTAL!
Bike
  • 1h 13m 55s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 20.13 mile/hr
Comments:

MAN, was that windy! Headwind, tailwind, crosswind, it was all there. Course was very crowded. Lots of bike penalties out there. I felt great though. Almost the entire time was just spent passing people. WHAT A FEELING!
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

My rack was way over in the section at a second aisleway to the right of the main transition entry/exit path. Had to go across rows of racks rather than just on the path and almost ran into someone coming out of her spot for the run. YIKES
What would you do differently?:

Just be more alert I guess.
Run
  • 48m 52s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Played it a little conservative. Knew I had a good bike and wanted to make sure I could finish the run so went a little slow. Just gradually passed anyone I could see with an age of 40-44 on their leg (female, of course). A little ways after the turnaround I heard someone call my name. I looked up and it was a friend of mine (also named Sharon) who I didn't even know was in this race. We are usually neck and neck in the local races and SHE'S the faster runner. OMYGOSH I CAN'T LET HER CATCH ME!!! I just really kept pushing and pushing the pace as best I could after that. WHY was I so conservative in the first half???? Keep going...don't forget she's back there. Finally there's the finish line and I'm neck and neck with ANOTHER woman my age. We crossed at the exact same time. I can't wait to see the finish line picture. We were going at it sprinting hard. Couldn't get any closer except unfortunately she had incurred a bike penalty so lost two minutes. Great news though, I BEAT THE OTHER SHARON by a minute!!!
What would you do differently?:

Not be so conservative at the beginning. Train more, train with other people to get faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of walking around. LOOKING ALL OVER FOR THE BT TENT. Found Bob, who also did great and finally after over an HOUR found the BT banner wrapped around a keg of beer like a mother swaddles her newborn babe.! I am definitley not a beer drinker, but it was a welcome sight.

Event comments:

Incredible race. Only problem was it was so crowded and there were so many waves that it took a few hours before we could get our bikes out of the transition area.

Had a great visit with all the BTers happily finished with their races. The entire weekend was an awesome experience.

Sharon - it was a pleasure meeting you.  I learned a lot from you in the short time we got to spend together and you are an incredible athlete.  Hell...with that 1 min swim split you're freaking awesome!!!   I'll definitely think of you while purchasing my next set of sunglasses.  Glad I got the opportunity to meet you and your family.  Congratulations on an exceptional race.

I am flat-out impressed!  You are an awesome athlete.  Oh, and by the way, I'm sure Bob would agree with me that women are supposed to have "hips".  Without them, you'd look like us and that would be very boring.

It was simply awesome to meet you, Bob and the kids.  I will take away some great memories from this weekend, most of which had to do with meeting all the fine folks here on BT.  You're an inspiration and I wish you the best in your race season this summer.

Woman, you are an INSPIRATION to this 40-44 reformed couch potato. Top 20% overall and 15% for your/our age group - you kick ass!!! I'll be reading your logs cuz when I grow up I wanna be just like you!

And on a personal note, it was a pleasure to meet you, Bob, and your boys.

Woah, nice race! I know the wind picked up good by the time you were on the bike course, so that is a great split. And if that is a "conservative" run, I want to see what happens you unload it all!

Great fun meeting all of you down there for this race. I know I'm definitely planning to come back and do it again next year.

Great work, Honey Bun!

"Almost the entire time was just spent passing people. WHAT A FEELING!"

Man.  I wish I could feel that!  I'm jealous!  I guess I will have to live vicariously through you and your mach 10 speed!

That said, wtf?  You ran CONSERVATIVE for the first few miles of the run??!!  Sharon?!  Sharon AKA the HARDWARE Queen?  *laughs*

As I told Karl...  ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK!

GREAT WORK, Sharon!  Way to smoke last year's race time!

LOL OMG with the hips already!! I'd trade hips for your athletic prowess any day! It doesn't appear that they hinder your performance at any rate! Way to go beating The Other Sharon on the run, maybe Jeff will learn sunglass technique from your race report

Nice job, and great race Sharon!
