I've recently started training for a century in September, and am wondering what to do for hydration on my longer rides.  Right now, I'm OK with 2 bottles on the down-tube and seat-tube.  (I think they are 24 oz.)  But once my rides get into the 40+ miles, or when the temperature heats up, I'll need more than this I think.

So what do you all do for hydration on your longer rides?  Are there even larger bottles that can go in the normal cages?

I like to carry a camelbak 'cause I'm cheap and that way I have to refill at gas stations less.  But I do the refill at gas stations thing when I'm out for a REALLY long time.

x2 for gas stations. good chance to stretch the legs for a minute or so too saves having to drag some poor person into meeting you half way to refill.

I have a 2-bottle rear hydration system (plus the one on my downtube) for long training rides. I ride out in the country where there are (literally) no gas stations or anywhere to re-fill. For races I just go with the aerobottle and the other one on my bike; remove the rear hydration system.

Define "long ride."

Under two hours I'll get by with a bottle or two. Longer rides I'll take the camelback, on hot days i'll half fill it, inflate the bladder, freeze it, then fill it the rest of the way, usually with gatorade, regular or endurance. That will last me about three hours.  If i go longer than that, I'll bring along the bottles too, and/or stop at a convenience store to refill the camelback.

Does the rear hydration system use the same size bottles?  And can you recommend a decent brand?

I use an Aero bottle on my bars and I have a two cage rear seat set up that I also use.  I try to keep only water in the Aero bottle and switch large or small bottles on the back with water or gatoraid or other "fuel" depending on the length of the ride and conditions.

I also do stop to refil water infrequently but I don't normally rely on this.

1 other note.  I find that the better I am hydrated ALL of the time, the less I need when I am training.

I carry two bottles on my bike.  On longer rides (usually 30+ miles), I stop at a gas station and refill.

Well I purposely left it vague, since I know it varies a lot from person to person, according to their fitness level and perspiration rate.  Since my fitness level still stinks, I'm fairly sure I require more hydration than others for the same distance.  And I haven't measured my persp. rate yet.

I like your idea of freezing the camelbak half-full, then filling it.  One of the things steering me away from getting a camelbak is I know my back would get really hot and sweaty -- but I can see how having something cool there would definitely help!  (Or does the camelbak have a lot of insulation?)

The camelbak is pretty well insulated,  I would be surprised if you felt the coolness of the bladder through the back.  Howover, you can get a pretty low profile pack and it's well worth it.  Heck, if you're sweating a bunch anyway what's a little warm spot on your back?  I would recommend one.  I noticed that mountain bikers wear them a lot because it leaves your hands free to ride the bike, which I like.  I know many serious riders that use them.

Since I got my Speedfil Hydration System for Easter....it's what I use for my long bike rides plus the AeroBottle...just in case...for more than 40 miles...

2 bottles on the bike (cages on the down and seat tubes), 2 bottles in my jersey pockets.  Stop and refill as needed every 40 miles or so.

Yup most rear hydration systems will fit the standard bike bottle. I have a Profile Design one and have not had any issues besides the screw coming loose a few times (no 'bottle launch' issues), even with a saddle bag shoved up above it.

2 bottles behind the seat. 1 bottle on the down tube. 1 aero bottle and if I am going really long, a Diet Coke in the jersey pocket.

Most of my rides are on a small loop course, so I can normally get away with the aero bottle plus one bottle of my calories behind the seat. I just refill at my car or at the water fountain at the lake.

X2.

My winter bike only has one bottle cage (no room on the seat tube), my summer bike has 2 cages, but I can only fit the standard (not the longer) sized bottles if I want to put two bottles in because the larger bottle won't fit on the seat tube. It rubs my legs. Damn, I hate having short legs sometimes!

If it's a long ride, I put a bottle in my pocket too and/or stop somewhere to refill the bottles.

For most races that I do, there are usually feed zones, so I get a bottle then. About a month ago, I did a 60 mile race in Washington in hot weather, and I drank 5 bottles. 2 I carried with me, and 3 I got passed to me in the feed zone. Damn, that was hot!

Well I already have a screw loose, so one more shouldn't make a difference. :P  Thanks for the info!
