Subject: Pizza Hut delivery driver cuts off bicyclist ....

I was talking with wavedog outside the SERF, one of the UW's recreational facilities, last night while waiting for Lazymarathoner, so we could go swimming.

I didn't see the accident happen but heard a "THUMP/THUD" sound, and then immediately turned my head to see the the aftermath of a bicyclist hitting a car.

It turned out that a Pizza Hut delivery guy didn't yield to traffic and decided to turn left towards Lake Street (heading North to Univ. Ave, away from the SERF building) and cut in front of the bicyclist who was oncoming (heading West). The bicyclist hit the vehicle head on and flew over the car.

I immediately got out my cellphone and ran over to the scene, and saw a number of people standing around, and one was on their cellphone.  I started yelling out asking if anybody was calling 911 and such, to which the one person on the cell was.

I noticed the biker was on the road on his back in pain complaining about one of his knees, no blood or cuts, and helmet was off but not split or anything.  I had my gym bag with a towel in it and assessed that he would have a little more comfort with that under his head then on the road.  I tried keeping him calm and talked with him, but the lady that was there helping, too, was a nurse, so I felt that I was needed anymore and decided to direct traffic, getting the gawkers and the persons slowing down out of the way and kept traffic moving until the police and ambulance could show up.

After 15 minutes or so, things wrapped up, the officer took statements, and the EMT had the cyclist in the ambulance.  I spoke with the nurse lady and her husband, whom saw the whole thing enfold.

I hope the cyclist is okay - he smacked the vehicle pretty good.

He had a nice roadie, with both front and back HED3s!

Then, to top it off, as I saw a clearing in the traffic, I started crossing in the crosswalk and some woman in an SUV yapping on the cellphone didn't slowdown and almost clipped me!  Luckily her window was down and I made sure she got an earful!  Right in front of where the accident was, of all things!  SHEESH!

What a night, last night.

Be careful, again, peeps!

Was he ticketed at all or did the cop say something like `Watch out for cars.' to the cyclist?

Sadly, it sometimes takes events like that to remind us to always be safe on our bikes, on our runs and  in our cars

Good job on being quick and taking action.

Hope he will be ok... I am sure pizza hut will fall all over themselves to make this go away

There was always crazy traffic near the SERF.  My husband lived on Dayton and Mills and we always saw the weirdest things.

I hope he's ok.  Good thing there were people there who saw it happen and who helped him.

Free 'za baby!!!

hijack on:
On a side note Mayor Daley made it illegal to `door' a cyclist, a common occurence in the city, when someone just swings open their door and a cyclist hits the door and flies over the bars to the amusement of nearby aholes. Anyway I asked my friend Louis, a police officer, and he wasn't aware of the law and said that the cyclist needs to beware of car doors opening. So, really, what chance do we have as cyclists if even the police don't know the laws designed to protect riders? And he's a triathlete!!!

Just had a discussion here at work along these lines. Louisiana just passed a "three-feet law"; my coworker was asked what good it would do if there isn't a cop around to enforce it. I maintained that the important part of this law wasn't the enforcement, or the penalties, or even the law itself. The important thing is that the legislation provides funding and other mechanisms to promote awareness of the stature through signage, inclusion in driver's education and testing materials, etc.

IMHO that's the solution: more awareness. We have sufficient laws on the book, we just need smarter, more aware drivers.

Going off your dooring thing in Seattle (actually I think it is in Washington) it is a drivers responsibility to make sure they will not impede any traffic (and bikes on the road are considered Traffic here) when opening their car doors. I have known at least one person who was riding legally in the marked bike lane (dont get me started on those though) and was doored and got compensation from the insurance for medical and Bike issues as well as the driver was ticketed. I am sure it does not always get ticketed but at least some of the local cops around here know the law. Granted we do have one of, if not the, largest cycling club in the country in Seattle (Cascade Bike Club) that has people devoted full time to education and advocacy so that definately helps out.

As for the pizza bandit and his cycling victim I hope the rider is ok and nothing seriously broken, hope the driver does not work there anymore, and I hope Pizza hut just learned how much a nice tricked out road bike costs...

I believe the delivery kid was calling his boss to let him know what happened when I was running across the street, and then about 5 minutes or so later another delivery kid came by.  I guess he was picking up the orders.  You know, gotta be within 30 minutes, or else.

Don't know.  The lady cop was taking a statement from one person.  I informed her there were a couple of other witnesses that were happy to assist when she was ready.

Totally agree - but smarter cyclists isn't a bad thing in some cases as well.

Last Sunday I left the LBS to return to the mountain bike park and was drafting 2 ladies and they(we - because I was following and not really paying attention - my bad) just blew a stop sign like it wasn't even there with a car waiting to turn.  It happened so fast and I was like aww carp - that was dumb.  I don't think they even thought to stop.

Not saying the original guy in WI is wrong, but we do some dumb stuff on bikes as well!

Yeah I've done some dumbazz things while zipping in and out of downtown Chicago traffic that should've gotten me killed. And it would've been my fault completely. I guess when you're on a bike and taking on cabs and buses you tend to do things that you normally wouldn't do to gain the upper hand. My goal when riding through the city is to get as far away from cars as possible.

Motorcyclists always push "watch-out for us" to the point where there's television commercials from the state DMV offices about it here and in TX.  Meanwhile, the only thing you ever see supporting a cyclists right not to get doored or run-over are the cyclists talking about it themselves.

Maybe since Triathlon is growing so much, USAT will get more members and maybe they can use some of the new-found money to lobby for some improved protections for runners and cyclists.  Most people are worried about the OWS, when I think the stats would definitely show the cycling as the most dangerous event for training at least.

Good on you for helping out like you did!  I've often wondered if anyone's studied whether or not the whole "30 minutes or it's free" policy correlates to an increase in traffic accidents...

Also, I have a question for the docs out there, something I've always wondered -- how do you know if it's safe/not safe to move a victim's head?  I've read conflicting information about it.

Nobody (no major chain, at least) does the "30 minutes or it's free" thing anymore, because it WAS causing crashes.  Fat lot of good discontinuing that policy did, it seems.

Actually, no pizza chain that I know of currently offers the "30 minutes or its free" thing, and haven't for a long time.

Second, the driver was probably fired unless that store is REALLY hard up for drivers. Most of the stores in the area in question are held by one franchise (Pizza Hut of Southern WI) holder.

Third, while I can't visualize the exact accident scene in my mind, I do know that many of the bikers in the area are college age people, and many many many of them just plain ignore traffic laws and signage. To be sure, in this case, 1sttimetri description paints the biker as someone who knows what he is doing, and the driver as the person who is at fault, and it certainly sounds like this.
The bicyclists who are careless are one of the biggest complaints in Madisons downtown and campus areas, yet its the bad cyclists who scream and holler and break traffic laws, so lets have a little more balanced view here.

Lastly, I deliver for PH as my weekend job, although in a city a bit south of this one. Just so you know where my views come from. Not a problem with cyclists like in Madison.
