Subject: Bike case vs shipping through bike shop
Hello all,
Most of the tri's i'm signed up for are far from my home state of NY. Is it worth it for me to buy a bike case vs. shipping if i do several events per year?

Are there bike cases that will be allowed on a plane? Is there a charge?

your responses are greatly appreciated,

eddie

I would do both: buy a case ( I own a Trico IronCase) and ship (rather than fly with) my bike. The case allows for easy packing with only partial dis-assembly, and protects your bike a lot better than a cardboard box packed by the LBS. Shipping is much cheaper ($24-40 each way) than flying with your bike ($75-$100 each way) and less hassle than having to lug the case through the airport and being subject to search and mispacking by security.

Just my $0.02.

How long does it take to ship your bike? I guess it depends on how far. The airlines usually charge about $80 to take.

What's the most inexpensive way to transport your bike?

By riding it, silly!

FedEx, UPS, etc. seem to be failry affordable options, I've heard $25-$40 each way, depending on what kind of account you have with them

But if you use FedEx or UPS you need to have an address on the other side (race site).  For my Florida Half IM, I will use a case and travel with it, because I don't know nobody in Florida.

I plan to have mine shipped fully assembled by TriBike Transport.  They pick up at a local shop, the bike will be waiting for me at Ironman village when I get to the race, and the bike will be back at my local bike shop when I get back home.

It seems that most races have a LBS that will allow you to ship your bike to them. And I know that most hotels will accept them as well - as long as you are registered to stay with them.
