On my bike ride yesterday, I scraped the back wheel of the rider in front of me and had my first big crash. I broke my right collarbone! And to top all this off, I'm entered in Gulf Coast Tri next weekend! I'm REALLY frustratted, pissed off, you name it. Anybody think it's possible to complete a 1/2 IM w/broken collar bone??? If so, pls advise....Right now, I don't see how.

Sorry to hear about your carsh. I broke my collar bone 3 days before my first tri last year. So I know how you are feeling.
Sorry, but there's no way to sugar coat this but you're not going to do any swimming soon. Heck, 1 week after my crash I wasn't even off painkillers. My orthopaedist cleared me to do easy breast stroke about 5 weeks after my crash. I completed my first tri about 12 weeks after my accident.
So just grin and bear it. There's a couple of us here went through this last year. Feel free to check out my training log from May of last year onwards and pm me if you need any more advice.
Heal fast heal well.

Well, Tyler Hamilton rode most of the Tour deFrance (2003?) with a broken collarbone), but I don't think that involved any swimming or running.

Sorry about your collarbone. What does the other guy look like? Your gut reaction is right on. There will be too much jarring in all portions. Your suffering would not be worth the result. It will prolong your healing as well as give you a hellacious bone scar! Tough break...sorry...couldn't resist.

on the bright side (if there is one), hopefully you got titanium parts if they had to repair the collarbone!
give it proper time to heal, as hard as its going to be.
here's to a speedy recovery!

I would go with carbon .... It just makes sense that you would be faster and more aero....

The clavicle is the most frequently fractured bone in the body.

I've broken both of mine. (Only once each).

I think the chances of you competetively, or painlessly, swimming the crawl with a fresh fracture is nil; ditto the breaststroke, butterfly.  You could try one armed backstroke, but that would make sighting somewhat difficult.

If you try the crawl or the other face-forward strokes, you could end up (if the bone is completely, through and through broken) cause some serious vascular damage if the sharp ends start swinging around in your chest whilst swimming.

My medical opinion, although the skeletal system is not my forte'

but if monkeys start coming out of your butt, now THAT is my forte'

is that you should consider the race fees lost and heal yourself. Take solace in the fact that the bone is not a major load bearing member and as such, your recovery will not result in a great loss in your ability to maintain fitness. You should still be able to cycle, especially if you are fond of the recumbent position; and running should theoretically be possible.

Sorry to hear about your accident - last time I broke my clavicle, I was given a sling, placed in a figure-of-eight shoulder harness, and sent out the door.   I swore I'd never do anything to impress a girl again.

...yeah, right.

Of course you shouldn't swim with a broken collarbone. Do you really need us to tell you this? I hope you were kidding.

LOL! Of course I need you to tell me this...I've spent the last four months training for this event. To not get a chance to start is difficult to accept. But what alternative do I have, except heal and tri again?

I think I'll stick with titanium!

Clay..

That SUCKS! Sorry to hear man..
Take care and heal yourself. Maybe you should turn to lots of posting and buying lots of cool tri gear to get through the injury

You have a right to be mad!! Rest the injury. Contact the race organizer, and Volunteer at the event!! Even though you are not racing, you will feel good just being around the other athletes.

And sitting at home eating a tin of Pringles, washing it down with a few Fosters, is BAD!!!
