My name is Mark and I am in Columbus Ohio. I am just beginning to train for a triathalon. I lift weights 5 days a week and I ride the bike all the time. Unfortunately I bought a mountain bike and that is all that I have to ride. I am hoping to catch a cheap road bike on craigslist or something as a thousand dollar bike is way out of my budget. I am trying to run as much as possible but I am a little heavier than when I was in school and running a lot. I still have roughly 30 lbs to lose which isnt bad considering my size. I am six five with a broad shoulder and large build so it isnt too bad. I need to do something competitive and would love to train with others or do a team triathalon but I have a lot of training yet to do. Any advice on a bike or how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!! Make sure to check out the Ohio forum, so real good people in there. Even though they been quiet the last couple weeks.

As for your bike, a couple of suggestions.  Performance bikes off Sawmill and the 270 sell cheaper bikes.  They dub themselves the "Walmart of bike shops".  You can get an entry level bike for under $500.  An even cheaper route, Walmart has a road bike for $200.  Other wise, find out what size you are on a bike and keep looking at craigslist.

What is a good bike to look for? I know the hardest part for me is going to be the running but I am slowly working on it.

I often ride my mountain bike - complete with knobbies - for sprint and olympic races.  For longer races I ride my carbon fiber tri bike.  The bike doesn't matter unless you're in danger on placing in the top 10...

I am just looking to do some long distance road rides as well with my wife so I was trying to get something that I could use for both. I am hoping to get some swim training in here soon. I have only been lifting and back in to exercising a lot for a couple months so I still have a ways to go. Are there any brands I should stay away from?
