Baylor Tom Landry Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 36m 20s
Overall Rank = 210/528
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 19/38
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5, ate normal AM shake (oatmeal, blueberries, yogurt, milk, whey protein), had a cup of coffee. Took my time as I only live a mile away from the site. Got to transition a little late, so real estate was hard to come buy. Racks were assigned, but not spots.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 07m 54s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a self seeded, indoor pool swim. I passed one person in pool, but could have passed another. Instead I just hung back since I only had 2 laps left. I had never swam a pool tri, and didn't know what to expect. It took a long time for them to get through all the athletes--people were still getting in the pool after I finished the whole race.
What would you do differently?:

Pretty happy with the swim, but should have gone out a little faster.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Again, need to get some tri shoes and learn how to get into them while riding. This really slows me down having to completely stop, swing my leg over and clip in.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 6s
  • 18 miles
  • 17.68 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was a hillier than I had thought, and we had a head wind going out. I got passed 4 times on the bike, and passed 2. I took my corners faster than in the past, so happy with that.
What would you do differently?:

By far my biggest limiter is not enough time on the bike. I need to get out and ride more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Came back to my spot and there were bikes in the way, so took a couple seconds to push people over.
What would you do differently?:

Take my feet out of shoes while on bike.
Run
  • 24m 6s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm happy with my run. Last sprint I did (well, the only other one I've done), I ran the 5K in 27 minutes. I'm stoked with the 3 min improvement. Truthfully I was happy just to run at all. I'm about 90% sure I have a stress fracture in my right foot. Have an appointment Wed to check it out. It was killing me, but I wasn't willing to sit this race out. I'm stupid like that. Had a nice little sprint to the finish the last quarter mile.
What would you do differently?:

Try to be healthier and quit ignoring pains for so long before going to the doctor.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, ate banana, drank some water. Had a hamburger and lounged in the sun with the wife and dog.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited bike training, foot, and limited training in general. I just came back from a 2.5 week vacation in France last weekend and was only able to do very limited training while over there.

Event comments:

Great race. The pool swim isn't my favorite, but I'd for sure do it again.

So the question is, can you walk today? Great job with the PR on the 5k. It looks like somewhere along the way you developed the mental toughness needed for triathlon. Hope you heal quickly.

Unfortunately not too well. Not looking forward to the verdict/lecture from the doctor on Wed. I just figured if it is a fracture, this will probably be my last race for awhile, so I wanted to at least complete it.

Sorry to hear about the foot but GREAT job on the race in any case!! Sounds like you were rockin' in the swim - after my experience with fairly rough ocean today, I'm jonesin' for a pool Tri!!!

Conrgats again - have a great holiday weekend-

Thanks!

Jeff, yes, I am planning on doing the Metroplex sprint. Get a repeat xray next week on the foot, so that will be the deciding factor
