Subject: Huge rookie mistake (good for a laugh)

Well, today was actually my second race, but I am defintely still a tri-rookie. After reading all of the embarassing stories on here I have to add mine. No nudity fortunately, but I can't think of much else that would have been worse.

The swim was in a river and started from Point A and went to Point B. As a result Point B was the transition area and we were told pre-race: "here is a bag, put the shoes you wear to Point A in it and we will bring it to Point B for you."  Following BT advice I bring only 1 pair of shoes, my racing shoes. Not thinking too much of it I set up transition and head to Point A for the start of the race with my running shoes and bag. I get my wetsuit on, place my shoes in the bag, throw it on the pile of other bags (which all contain flip-flops interestingly).

I arrive to T1 and my shoes aren't there. Not knowing what to do I decide "the hell with it" and just keep going. I do the bike (14.5 mi) and swim (2.8 mi) barefoot, getting a ton of funny comments and looks along the way. By the end I looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame as I stubbed my toe so much it was covered in blood, my ITB decided to act up to I was limping, and no back-support from my shoes left me hunched over in pain. Just imagine Igor from from Mel Brooks' Frankenstein completing a triathlon and you have a good mental picture of how I looked and felt.

Turns out the "shoe return" was just for a second pair of shoes so people wouldn't have to get to Point A barefoot having set up their running shoes at Point B. Oh well, live and learn.

Ouch!! Good on you for finishing without shoes! That is awesome! I work with a guy who told me he once did a half iron man in orange Converse. I thought that story was hard on the feet until I heard this one.

Great job of finishing and adjusting to no shoes.

Bet you'll have extra pair of shoes with you in the future.

Reminds me of a training tip I read recently that suggested you run sometimes without shoes, as it is supposed to build up your muscles.  Just tell people you were doing that.

Congrats on finishing a race in tough circumstances.  I don't walk around barefoot (flip-flops, slippers, or shoes all the time), so I wouldn't even consider trying to ride and/or run barefooted.

I brought my wife and kids, which meant I  showed up later than planned.

With no warm-up or stretch, I needed to run from Transition to registration to get numbered in time. (Barefoot) and ended up pulling my left calf.

Local races we take separate vehicles.

I'm glad I put a smile on your faces. As much as it hurt at times (managed to avoid the glass), it really felt cool to be so "hardcore". One guy even commented "wow, that's so oldschool, awesome!" Of course he then blew past me on a bike that had to cost at least 2K

To address some of the comments: I have never run or biked barefoot, but fortunately read a few threads on the topic a couple of months ago so I had an idea of what to do and what not to do.

Oh and I forgot to mention- I was so overwhelmed at T2 that I didn't take my helmet off until 200 yards into the run. I just threw it on the ground and fortunately it was there when I was finished. I think everyone was so amused by my lack of footwear that didn't look at my head

I finished my first sprint today and made a couple funny rookie mistakes as well...

not having a race number belt thingy I just safety pinned my number on my shirt, then placed everything in a pretty pile by my bike like I saw in the video's. So after I finished my swim I was feeling pretty good. Ran into T1, pulled my shirt over my head, and found that I had put the safety pins through both the front and back of my shirt. Made it a little hard to put on...

I also missed the cage when trying to put my water bottle back in after a drink. Just dropped it right onto the road. Thought about leaving it, but as I wasn't trying to win anything I turned around and picked it up.

Thanks to all the BT'ers for all the great beta I've learned from this site. Other than the two hickups I mentioned the race went pretty well. I actually won the 'mountain bike' division, although there were only like seven of us.  I've definitely got the bug, already signed up for another race....

Wow Goisels... I'll bet your feet are happy you lost that 25lbs!  If you got to the Pinchot Tri, now I'll know how to find you to say "hi".  Laughing

So at my next triathlon... If I see a guy running in bike shorts, a helmet, and barefooted... I'll know it's Goisles... haha JUST KIDDIN!

Awesome story!  That's hardcore!  I think I would have never left the transition area.

That is too funny people must have thought you were so hard core. I was laughing when I read that you forgot to remove your helmet. I recently completed my first tri and I guess I just got so carried away and forgot to remove my helmet too. I had to go back after the race and pick it up. The funny thing is at the exact moment I realized what I had done and I threw my helmet down, low and behold there was another helmet there.  I guess more people than we know do this exact same thing!

I did the helmet thing too. Priceless.

It's kinda cool though to have a good story to go with your first Tri.
