I've just come off a week and weekend of quite high volume training. There is no doubt that I needed a rest day today.

However, because of having a rest day, I've felt quite useless and a bit depressed and anti-social. Is this because I'm tired? Or is this normal on rest days because I haven't had any exercise?

Do you guys and girls get the same on your rest days or taper?

dude . . . you were exhausted. take lots of naps, eat well, drink plenty of fluids and enjoy it. very normal.

and yes . . . it is a little of a downer to miss the endorphins of the workout(s). but your body will thank you!

one of hte reasons (well and i think it works better) i schedule 4-8 week blocks of sustainable workload that can be repeated week after week vs a 1-3 HEAVY weeks and then backing off for a day or two, throws things off big time for me.

If taking a complete rest day (no exercise at all) leaves you feeling that way, you could try taking a day of "active recovery" instead. Go for a short easy bike, on the road or trainer, or a nice easy swim. I've come to prefer this kind of active recovery to complete rest (not that I NEVER take a day off - sometimes life gets in the way of training, too!!)

I would suggest trying to plan a "day of recovery" if you plan on doing this again.  You're body needs recovery time, especially after a couple days of hard core work-outs.

When I get over tired I get depressed, cranky, and sometimes over emotional.  I think it was just you bodies way of saying it needs some quiet down time.

We're allowed to take rest days?

Totally normal.

When I taper I feel awful... both sluggish/ tired but also anxious/ hyper.

I get through it by reminding myself that I need the rest before a race, that it will help me be a better triathlete, and also by doing stuff I've neglected during training... haircut, clean the house, laundry, etc.

Maybe you could schedule dinner with a friend you haven't seen?  Read a book? Get a massage?

Recently I've been scheduling an art class on my day off. It's relaxing (and frustrating) in a different way, and it's low-pressure socializing.
