I've been using the Fuhrmann Institute of Running plan...longest run for the half is 15 miles.  I've been slacking on the cross training it prescribes...Even without the cross training I think its made me faster and stronger.  The three run workouts per week are harder than any run workouts I've ever done consistently (that being said, I've only really been running consistently for 1.5 years).

I ran a 10 miler yesterday at a good pace and six more today with no real nagging issues...I'm feeling pretty good about the whole running thing!  Who'da thunk?

I will be at the Running fit training run for either 12 or 13.1 this Saturday.  I'm looking forward to it!  Laughing

I'm out for this year.  Focusing on some other things right now.  Will look to do this next year for sure though.

How is everyone doing? I am doing the full marathon, and am very concerned over the lack of mileage that I have done, due to PF. I really need to do this marathon, otherwise I do not think I will be doing one ever. The first couple marathons I wanted to do was Chicago, and truthfully that is what I originally wanted to do this year. I procrastinated and missed the cut off.

If I run 12 miles at 10 min mile pace, and walk the rest, will I finish before the cutoff, so I can get my finisher medallion? I am so looking forward to meeting you. My wife and I are staying at the Marriott in downtown. My in laws are even planning on being there. I am wanting to do this.

I have tried rest, stretching, and my PF does not get any better?? It hurts to the touch right where my achilles tendon ends and my heel is. I have good days and bad days.  My long run so far is 11 miles. I am going to try to make a fifteen miler this weekend.

Well I'm thrilled to see you in Detroit!! Stay healthy and Happy Training and God's Speed!

If my math is right and your walking is at a 15 minute/mile pace you should just make it.  Last Sunday was my longest run to date and that was 15.4, but I felt good afterward.  I still don't have a hotel reserved and am worried about that now that several of the recommended ones are sold out.

While it is late in the game, I would think a Galloway Run/Walk or Walk/Run approach would get you to your goal healthier (and easier) than burning up all you have in the first 12 miles and walking in.  I did my one and only marathon doing 7/1 (7 minutes running, 1 minute walking).  I was crusing along at about 9:30s up to mile 17 when a misstep tweaked my right thigh (freak accident).  I was able to finish the last 9 miles with more walking than running and got it done.

7/1 worked for me.  I'd try various combos to see if there is one that lets you go further with less pain (I know, most would say rest and fight another day, but this doesn't appear to be an option so I won't try and change your mind on trying).  I've known folks to do 5/1 and average 10 MM and do 10/1 and average 10 MM.  This weekend would be a real good time to put this to the test.

If the pain is in the "manageable" category, BioFreeze may be an option to back of some of the ache.  Among other dings, I have a deformity in my left foot that can place some serious pressure on the tendons.  BioFreeze (real or percieved) helps.

Here is a link to some of the Galloway info:

thank you very much for the advice, however things have changed. My new neighbors moved in, their chiropractors. They talked to me for like ten minutes, and it is no longer PF, it is Achilles tendinitis. Is that worst than PF? Is doing this marathon still possible? I have a ten miler and 16 miler scheduled this weekend. However, I did a little research and rupturing the achilles has me very very concerned. I have health benefits that are useless because of the deductible. Anyone has any advice? Thank you and I still plan on coming up there. Thank you again Detroit Team:-)

Would you rather pay your deductible now and figure out just what is wrong and IF the doc thinks doing the marathon is possible or may cause significant damage, or, wait and pay the deductible when you possibly do cause significant damage and then have to correct it?

I'd have it looked at NOW.  Consult your running friends or do some searching online and find a doc that "gets" running.  I have a nasty foot issue and found a podiatrist that is also a triathlete.  She manages my issue like an athlete, not like any other patient.

Good luck!

I have two hotel rooms available for anyone that wants to take the reservations. Otherwise I'm just going to cancel them. They are at tCourtyard Marriott in Downtown. I have two rooms reserved for Saturday night? I don't know how I can change the reservation over to you. I believe they were 150 a night each room. Please let me know. I rather make sure someone here gets them before I just cancel them.

Obviously from the above paragraph, I am officially getting out of the race. My achilles tendon is more important than this race, and I will work and pray on getting better, so I can tri it again another time. I have a lot of things going on in my life right now, and the achilles tendon rupture possibility was more than enough for me to opt out. I'm extremely disappointed, because I really want to do this for me. For Me, that is right, no one else, but myself, and give all the Glory to God! But it wasn't in God's Will for this year.

I wish you all the very best, I hope everyone gets their personal best! I hope all the first timers have a memory that will last a lifetime. Stay Healthy, Happy Training, and God's Speed!

If you went to the SOS today and applied you might have it in time.  Mind only took 9 days.

Just to screw up your list, I am toying with doing the 5k.  I figure I can make it to the finish line in time to cheerlead for the HM'ers.  Its only $30 and you get the long sleeve tech shirt.  If I'm going to be down there any way, I might as well be productive.

I have never run a 5k that wasn't part of a tri.  Actually, it was on my to-do list earlier this year.  I've done 1 marathon in the past(my 1st event ever in 2006), 1 half marathon(2009), 1 10k(2008), and 1 4 miler (2009),  but never a stand alone 5k.  Hmmmmm...?

If you haven't applied for the enhanced DL and don't have a passport you should quit begging anyway.  You probably don't have enough time to get one.  If you have that covered we should be able to help give you suggestions on assertive nagging.

It's my first and it's a "finish it upright at a pace faster than walking" type of full for me.  I did manage to run 19 miles on Sunday and survived but I was very, very slow.  I still do not have any plan for nutrition the week of or day of the run, and I have no idea what to wear.

My longest was 20 so I am not any better then you.  I manage to run 11 min per mile which is slow...

I bought 4 gu and decided to have one every 5 miles, and I don't know what to wear either.  But I start digging old clothes form the closet.  I will wear them before the race (and ditch them on the road once the race start/warm up)

Dan, you will be waiting for 51 years to run the detroit mary?

Awesome!!  My 1st race ever was the Detroit Marathon when I was 41 years old.  I like that there is someone else who chooses big for his 1st running race.

I may be doing the 5k, which would be my 1st 5k running race ever.

I was going to mention this... are people surprised the half and relays are still open for registration?  For the past several years the half has sold-out WEEKS prior to race day!  I truly wonder how big the turnout will be this year.  I'm sure economics plays a huge role, but as I recall, last year had the highest turnout on record.
