Subject: Are energy gels supposed to be nasty?

Last week I went for a 2 1/2 hour run and felt very depleted of energy by the end.  I decided it was time to try out some of the energy gels.  I live in a small town so GNC was my only source.  I picked up 3 or 4 different types.

Last night I tried the Gulp n Go.  The flavor isn't what bothered me, it was the thickness of it.  I'll try the others that I have, but if I just can't choke down the slime, what other options should I look at?  Does anybody blend it with water and carry it in a bottle?  Are energy bars easy enough to digest that they won't bother me?  Are there any brands that aren't so thick?

I've never heard of gulp-n-go, so I can't comment on that. The first one I ever tried was powergel, which was like paste, really horrible stuff.  Then I went to hammer gel, which is somewhere between a jelly and syrup consistency. That's mainly what I've been using, and yes, I do mix it in with water for some rides.  There's quite a variety of tastes/consistencies out there, just have to do some experimentation to try to find one that seems to work for you.

I personally use a brand called Crank Sports E-gel. It contains 150 carb calories per pack. I have had no digestive problems with this and it doesn't taste too bad. As far as the thickness goes, you have to dring water with it. In the May issue of INSIDE TRIATHLETE there is an article on gels in which it states, "Only Hammer Gel goes so far as to tell you how much water to drink with its gels with the word 'consume with 3 to 4 ounces of water'. This amount of water, while aiding in hydration a little, is needed to process, break down and digest the gel".The article went on to describe exactly what is in the different gels and talked about electolyte intake. If you get a chance to read this article, I recommend it.

Get the gel in your mouth and wash it down with water. I about can't swallow them without water.

HammerGel is good and some of their other products, specifically Perpetuem, work well also.  My favorite gel is GU.  Lots of flavors to choose from and not too thick a cosistency.  With any gel though, you're going to have to take it in with water.  Both to wash it down and to help it absorb quickly.

I was so not expecting the flavor nor the consistency the first time I had the gels. What I've found helps if I get a particuarily nasty flavor is to take down about 1/4 of the gel, then a big swig of water then repeat until the gel is gone.

Tequila doesn't give me the nasty facial expressions Vanilla PowerGel does. Yeeach.

The manner in which you ingest the gel will depend on when you are taking it.  You can take it before swimming, biking or running and chase it down with a lot of water.  Or, you can mix the gel in a small bottle with water and ingest it at your leisure during the bike ride or during the run ... never while you are swimming :-)

Yep, gels scientifically formulated to be the consistency of snot.

I use CarbBoom (tasty!) and HammerGels (not so tasty, but easy to get down) because they are a little thinner and I can breathe and take the gel at the same time.

If you're going to pre-mix them with water, wouldn't it be better/simpler/cheaper/tastier to just use Gatorade or similar sports drinks?

Bear, don't mix gels with sports drink. It's either gel + water, or sports drink only. Chasing gel with Gatorade gives most people too many calories too absorb effectively. Unabsorbed calories bouncing around in your gut spells p-u-k-i-n-g.

I think bear meant if you're going to mix gel & water, why not just drink a sports drink.  But I think the answer is that you don't mix a gel into 16oz. of water.  You use only a few oz. in order to get it down easier (the same as you would if you took the gel and then washed it down with a few oz. of water).  This way you get cals/carbs without having to guzzle a lot of fluid.

I actually don't mind most gels I've tried so far (a few flavors have been tough) even if I have to "chew" it a bit to get it down.

When racing bikes, I typically use one of the gel 'flasks' than can hold 4 shots. You have to add water to the stuff when using the flask in order to make it flow properly - not a lot - just a couple of table spoons and shake it up well.

It does make it go down easier - stlll tastes like crap. I guess there are certain trade-offs for highly dense, easily transportable, quickly consumable foods.

I know a few racers who do just empty the gu into their water bottles. Less stuff to deal with, I guess. I've just always preferred to keep my hydration and nutrition seperate.

I have to prepare myself like it's a tequila shot. The chocolate is the worst! Maybe at the next race or ride, find someone of the opposite sex (or same, whatever the preference) and offer to do a body shot off them. The salt will probably already be there from the sweat anyway! OK, gross.
Seriously, I buy a couple different kinds and flavors to try them out. Soon you'll find which ones you can stomach. I find the vanilla ones are fairly mild, but I stick with the big-name brands because I think they taste a little better.

Check this out for home made gels... I have found this works a treat, and you can add as much water as you need. Just one tip when you put the cling wrap on, press it down to the liquid, because there is a gluggy formation on the surface, and pushing it down stops this.

My fave cordial is lemon and raspberry.

I've made my own gels (there is a recipie in the Food and Smoothie Forum) and have had great success. Originally I was using just sugar, maltodextrin, water, salt and artifical flavour but recently I have tried one with raspberry jam and one with apple sauce I find they are quite good (well as good as can be expected ).

This way you can play with consistency, taste, sweetness (watch out for fructose), electrolytes, etc and completely customize your gel.

Anyway, after some more experimenting with quantities I'll post a new recipie for one with jam or apple sauce.

I've tried most all of them and I prefer Carb-Boom. Real fruit, tastes almost like a jelly packet. Honey Stinger is supposed to be pretty good, although you can just carry honey in a flask for that.

There's tons of different gels out there each with their own consistency, flavors, and energy input.  For one of the BT articles, I had the opportunity to try out a pretty good variety of some of the major gels out there.  Some have the consistency of peanut butter, some like bad jello, and others are pretty liquidy.  Experiment around until you find one that you like.  I'd say with a 2 1/2 hour run, you definitely need some sort of extra calories so that you don't bonk.

In all cases though, you gotta chase the gel with some type of liquid.  A majority of the time, I've done water, but I've had no issues with sports drinks either.  I've only taken a gel without a chaser 2 seperate times, and each time was a gutbomb.  I disagree with the statement that the gels mixed with sports drink gives you too many calories that your body can absorb.  Gels are normally only 120 calories - pretty much all of it in the form of maltodextrin.  Sports drinks are normally all simple sugars (fructose, sucrose, etc) and provide another 120-200 calories per 8oz or so.

Gulp 'n Go Orange was one of my least favorites - not sure if the additinal herbal components in that stuff was good for me or not, but I didn't have a good experience with it.  Carboom gels seemed a bit thinner to met.  Since the article I've become a much bigger fan of Hammergel (which is still kind of thick, but I swear by their maltodextrin mixture they are using), and lots of Gu fans around here too.

Oh yeah...and before you use a gel, squish it around a little bit before you open it to even the consistency and avoid any potential settling.

I found one that I really like. It is called Energice Go Gel. I have tried the blue raspberry and the fruit punch. Both taste like jello. Definitely try them.

First off, if you wait until you're feeling depleted, you're not using the gel correctly. Use it before experience has shown you that you get depleted.

I open my gel and kind of "sip" on it over a half mile or so. Another option is Sharkies, which are gummy sharks with electrolytes, carbs, etc. that are easier, for me, to take in than gels and don't get your hands sticky.

Another option would be to take a good, wholesome energy bar and chop it into bite sized pieces and take them as you go. I think Jeff Galloway uses Power Bars.
