Got a buddy I am trying to get into the sport but he is 6'11" and weighs between 280 and 290 on any given day. Is there any bike out there that would possibly fit or should he just stick to jogging and P90X???

Zinn make custom frames for big guys.  There are 64cm road bikes out there, and I'm looking for one my self (I'm 6'7") but that could still be a little small for him.

*Disclaimer*
This is based on MT and BMX bike knowledge and may not apply

My old man owns a mountain bike and BMX bike shop.  When bigger guys would come in who had issues fitting on Mt Bikes he would fit them on a larger frame with an extra long seat post.  Dont know if this works for Road bikes or not or if its just the BMXer inside me dieing to escape.

No, not Shaq......In fact he pretty much stinks at most sports except baseball. He is ok at basketball but how could you not be at that height. He is very active and would like to go on our rides but I just don't know where to steer him for a bike. You should see him on his mountain bike now. Very similar to an elephant on a tricycle. Pretty damn funny!! I guess custom is prob the way to go but it is also the most expensive. Is 63 or 64 the largest of the XL frames???

Google Luther White. He has a blog I think. He is a BIG triathlete from NJ. He is not that tall but he started at 350 lbs. He is sponsored by Zipp and tests their Clydesdale wheels. He would be a good source for big guy gear.

His email (from his own post on ST is: [email protected]

A buddy of mine is around 450lbs and 6'7".  He got a Specialized Rockhopper (Or a Hard Rock).  Got the 21" frame.  Even on lock out he can completely compress the shocks.  He only rode it twice and th rear wheel is a little warped but the rest of the bike is holding strong.

My other buddy also got a road bike around 250lbs at 6'2".  It was a Trek Discovery edition and is now what I ride at 215lbs.  When he 1st started mountain biking he had a Specialized Hardrock and was around 260-270lbs and that bike is still going strong.

The guy who got me in to tri is a 6'8" roadie.  Both his bikes are Merlin customs.  His height is one issue but the variance in his dimensions (linger legs, shorter torso) is even more pronounced because he is so tall.
