Subject: Almost Hit By A Car
Was out riding very slowly on Sunday morning.  I was on a 2 lane country road and heard a car coming on a cross street up ahead.  He had a stop sign, so I planned on riding through, but I heard him still going as I approached the street and I slammed on my brakes only to see him go through the stop sign and swerve to miss a sign and into the ditch across the road.

I stopped to see if he was OK and fell trying to get out of my clips/pedals.  Apparently he had the morning sun in his eyes and did not see the stop sign, or the T in the road.

Had it not been for about 10 yards, I would have been T-Boned and seriously messed up.

Just thought I would share.

I'm glad you weren't listening to an ipod at the time or at least not with two earplugs in or super loud music.  That's a heck of a way to start your day.

Oh yeah I got stung by a bee about 10 min into my ride.  On the left forearm.  At the time I thought that was interesting.  Little did I know...

Glad you're okay.  I used to ride inside the loop in Houston.  Almost getting hit occurred on the average of once every 30 miles.  I also have stopped wearing my ipod.  I want to hear everything going on around me.

That happened to my brother several years ago  in Denver.  The car ran a red light and he swerved to miss the car.  He was going downhill at a good clip and ran into a telephone pole.  He was seriously messed up with a punctured lung.

That was a close call, bet your heart rate was significantly raised! Glad you are okay.

Thanks for the reminder to always be riding defensively and not to trust that a driver in a car is going to do what you think he/she will do.

I ride with the theory that I am invisible to everyone.  There is one particular intersection on a road I ride frequently where the cross road has a stop sign. On that road there is a golf club.  Many times I've seen cars roll through that stop sign because they can see that no cars are coming down the other road (the one I am biking on that is the through road not having to stop at the intersection).  I had a guy in a fancy sports car nearly hit me when he rolled through the stop sign while talking on his cell phone and  obviously he never saw me even when he drove right in front of me and I had to stop to not hit his car.  I now always slow down and assume people don't see me at every intersection even when my road is the through road and they have the stop sign.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Finally, a story about a cyclist running a car off the road and into a ditch. Nice work!

I'm glad you're ok.  But you heard him still going or saw him still going?

This has nothing to do with an ipod and everything to do with a driver that was clueless.  Glad you observed the driver and appropriately responded.

Years ago I was approaching an intersection where a car had just come to a stop. I had no stop sign so was planing on crossing in front of the car as would have been my right of way. As I got almost in front of the car it started to pull out and T- boned me. Fortunately I saw it coming was not clipped in and was able to go over the hood instead of under the car. The sun was behind me and even though the driver looked my way she said that she could not see me with the sun behind me. I am now very cautious when the sun is at my back.

You just can not be too careful. Two cyclists were hit last week in our community. I had three close calls within a few minutes riding through town this weekend (2 of them intentional).

Intentional?!  Some drivers are so willing to take risks with other people's lives -- insane!

Yes, intentional. First was a young girl who looked, saw me, made eye contact, and proceeded to pull out right in front of me. I had to hit my brakes to avoid a collision. Than two teens in a car pulled out from the other side of the road going in same direction and laughed as they nearly grazed me. I keep them in sight and with a stoplight coming up they took a side road to avoid me pulling up next to them. Good thing for them (and probably me) as I was angry and ready to retaliate as I saw this as an assault. Somewhere between those two incidents a kid opened a car door into the road without looking. I saw that one coming though as I watched him pull over and was just expecting anything that could be bad to be bad.

When someone did something aggressive to me like that above I yelled something at the guy.  He asked what I yelled.  I told him, his license plate number.  He drove off.

I just heard the sound of a car going 55mph and did not see him in front or behind so I assumed he was on the cross street and hit the brakes.  I guess I will hit the brakes either way in the future.  I drive a Prius and many times when I am in electric/stealth mode I cannot be heard.
