Hi Everybody, on the Thursday before Vineman (first 70.3 to be completed), I got into a bicycle accident and ended up with a compression fracture on the lumbar 2 with some anterior wedging.  The MRI found osteoporosis and I'm sitting around now waiting until the ortho further diagnosis' me and gives me my path to recovery.  I'm 27 years old and I never though this could happen.

I'm reading now about the Female athlete triad and how vulnerable us women are to it.

Since the incident, July 17th, I have been swimming only. The first week , 2 sets of 500 meters on different days.  Yesterday I did 1000 without the slightest pain.  Not taking any pain medications.

Anybody relate or seen this happen?  If so, what were the steps to recovery that you saw and mistakes that  you've seen made? I keep reading 6 months, but I think I'm starting ahead of the curve..maybe with the chance that it is a minor fracture. I'll find out more on the 11th.

Thanks

Wow, sorry to hear that.  I don't have any advice to offer, but can relate.  I had a bicycle accident in a race on July 18.  Broke my wrists and was told I might have a compression fracture in my spine.  Thankfully, the x-rays were negative on the comp fx in my case, but it was pretty frightening while I waited to find out if my back was broken.

Best wishes to you.

Sorry to hear about your fracture!

Have you had your vitamin D levels checked?

Thats one of the first things they are going to check I hope, if not, I believeI should have the Vitamin D checked, the magnesium and the calcium.  I've been reading a lot about calcium and how most of it doesn't get absorbed. Must be taken with meals and the body can only absorb 500mg max at a time. I have been throwing money down the drail taking 1000 in the morning and without the proper vitamin D for absorption.
