When the gun goes off at the start of a big race with a lot of people, there is the large mob of people that are all trying to move forward as fast as possible without stepping on anyone. In one of the marathons I ran of this size, someone in front of me dropped their iPod (maybe a swinging arm nearby knocked it off), and then was bending over looking for it in the middle of the crowd and bumping into people/getting in everyones way. This was a very bad and dangerous situation. For that reason I would suggest bringing a cheaper type iPod (like a shuffle) if you have one or just be willing to face the risk of losing it if it does fall off at the start of the race.

trishie - 2009-07-31 1:36 PM Some races WILL DQ you for wearing headphones.  I think that happened at Grandma's a couple years ago (?)

If it's not against the rules, then by all means do what is best for YOU, but consider this:
you may like racing WITHOUT headphones.  I always run with music or an audiobook, but I never race with headphones.  I feel like you miss out on the atmosphere of the race ... esp. a race like R&R that has a "party atmosphere"

my suggestion would be to not wear them and see what happens.

Agreed - use 'em if you really need 'em but this is a big race that's meant to be more fun - you could miss out on some fun and people cheering you on!

I ran the RNR in VA Beach 2 years ago and it was actually one of the only races that actually allowed you to use your Ipod!  I'd say use it if it helps you!  You aren't necessarily going to like all the music you hear along the course..so if you need your own tunes..go for it! There will be 100s of people who will be doing the same!

I am totally fine with people using iPods in races, as long as they're careful, and as long as they keep the sound down. This is quickly becoming a pet peeve of mine! I hate it when I'm running alongside someone and they've got the sound turned up so loud that I can hear tinny music coming from their ears -- just loud enough to be irritating but not loud enough for me to actually hear the song. And yes, I know, the answer is to speed up and get away from them, but at one race I did last year this woman with a loud iPod was pacing off of me and it took me a mile or so to shake her. On top of that her Garmin was acting up and beeping constantly but irregularly. I don't know if she just didn't care about the beeping, or didn't notice because her music was so loud, but either way, *annoying*.

So yeah, wear the iPod if you want to (and the rules allow it), just be considerate of other runners.

Run with a boom box

I'm pissed I saw this thread.  I was suppose to fly to Chicago this weekend to visit my gf but had to cancel due to a ton of unexpected expenses pop up.  I would have loved to make this my 1st 13.1.

But I will say that running with a bunch of no name bands would be awesome.  I love small bands and think that hearing new music would distract me more as I try to figure out what they are singing.

I ran a half mary last spring on paved trails.  The ipoders annoyed the sheesh out of me because they couldn't hear me coming and so wouldn't move to the right to let me pass.  One guy cut me off 3 times on one corner even tho I was very loudly letting him know I was trying to pass.  I came really close to yanking their earphones out and yelling ON YOUR LEFT in their ears.  Instead I kept myself entertained by having silly conversations with them at regular talking level knowing they couldn't hear me.  I did get one funny look -- he must have had his volume down.

So, I vote NO on ipods.  Especially at a RNR mary.  Have fun chatting w/ other runners and enjoy the music no matter how bad it is!

And why should a runner come off their line to let you pass? I've never actually heard a runner announce a pass in a race but if they did, I would do nothing but continue to run.

If the rules required runners to be on the right due to the tight course, the ipods still had nothing to do with their violation of those rules.

OP, No offense, but I really can't stand it when people where iPods in races.  And it is specifically against the rules.  That said, I did every RnR race last year, and saw literally thousands of people wearing them, so you won't be DQ'd or anything.  Many of their flyers / brochures even show people wearing them.

It all depends on how you feel when your running. I've run races with and without.  Always check the rules of the race to make sure they are allowed, but other than that I say do what makes you feel good about your race.

BTW: Yes for a year USATF did ban all headphone useage at races, however in this last year they repealed that bad to all races that are not championship races.

For a mega-race like this I doubt anyone would really care or be annoyed because of the general atmosphere and type of course.

But, I have been extremely annoyed during several small local races run on trails/bike paths. Last one was like an interval workout because people could not get around the clusters of chicks off in la-la land grooving to their beat. They would run three or four across completely blocking the path. A polite on your left or excuse me was a meaningless gesture gone unanswered. I saw a few people start pushing their way through the rolling blockades while both parties looked at each other like WTF?

While common sense would have helped as far not running hand in hand the extensive use of ipods made it impossible for people to deal with it in a civil manner.

TriMyBest - 2009-07-31 11:26 AM As long as it's not against the rules there's nothing wrong with it.
+2. Check the rules and do whatever you want. IMO, "Frowning upon" someone who likes music during a run is ridiculous. If it is against the rules of a race and you do it anyway, IMO, you're cheating and should get a DQ.
x3.  I dont race with one personally, train with one every once in a while.  Ipod or not, my beef is with folks that are swerving around or make a quick cut without checking behind em.  More often than not my experience has been its someone with an Ipod.  So for me, the issue with Ipods is for folks that run like idiots and cant hear you if you are passing.  Other than that, have a blast so long as its race legal!

And, never forget, nobody on BT who wears an Ipod while racing has ever been one of those idiots.  It's always some other guy...

Good point, the fact that they had ipods on may not have had anything to do with the fact that they were hogging the trail; maybe they were just rude or ignorant.  It just so happens the ipoders were the ones running slowly down the middle of the right half with people trying to pass and they weren't giving any room.  As I said, this was a paved trail run so there wasn't much room and no such thing as a line since it didn't make a difference like it does in a road race, and with non-racers using the trails and lots of racers going diff speeds, you had to stay to the right unless you were passing.  People w/o earbuds moved/stayed right because they heard people coming behind them as did I.  Fairly simple concept unless you can't hear someone behind you.  Or don't care that you're obstructing someone else's race.

I always wear an ipod during running only races. You will see thousands with them most likely. Take it and use it.

Thousands? Really???

At the RnR races, particularly the halves, which are VERY beginner friendly?  Yeah, I'd guess thousands.  This thread is kinda funny at this point, since the OP has already run the race with the iPod.  To another poster who commented on the bands during the country music marathon - The type of bands run the gamut from country, rock, blues, jazz, etc.  There was a 311 cover band a year or two back.

This is taken directly from the Chicago Marathon Site:

Can I run with an iPod/headphones?
Yes. USATF, the national governing body of the sport, recently amended its ban on headphones, iPods and similar devices. Only athletes competing in Championship races for awards, medals or prize money may not use electronic devices such as headphones and ear pieces.

So, run with music guilt free, unless you're gunning for an award.

if its allowed in the rules, use it.

if its not allowed, dont.

i wouldn't worry about what others think...its your race and as long as you follow the rules, do what you want.
