Don't know about the longer races, but I'll never drink Coke again for a sprint.  I'm a good swimmer. The combination of caffeine, sugar, excitement and cold rain Is NOT a good combo for me. It had my heart rate and breathing all screwed up.

I expected this thread to be about Tom Boonen's training methods...

Seriously though, I've used flat coke on mountain bike rides and it works to give me a little extra boost toward the end of a ride.

ugghhh.  I still can't imagine how anyone can drink soda under normal circumstances let alone an athlete, let alone an athlete in a race.

surely there has to be a better way to get extra energy than coke.  I prefer gu washed down with water or gatorade.

I have been reading IM race reports, then yesterday about a century ride I would like to do.  Coke-Cola is mentioned a lot.  It seems to be fairly common at aid stations.  I can't figure out why.  Is it the sugar, caffine or even the bubbles to settle your stomach?

Sugar. Caffeine.

I can say though, that Coke did not save me on my IM marathon. While a nice treat, it didn't turn me into a peppy-running-I-feel-great racer.
