Wondering how a person at my age starts out becoming involved in a triathalon?  In not to bad of shape but know I need some work in order to have any success.  Entered my first sprint tri in just a few short weeks.  Went into it on a team--I am doing the biking.  Open to advice on biking, continuing or sitting on the side lines at 56 yrs--never sit out!!!

Good for you!

Is age a problem?  Only if your sedentary. Keep moving and it's not an issue.

Have you considered doing a Sprint or SuperSprint yourself? We have plenty of free training plans, I'm sure one of them would work for you.

Age is not a problem.  And particularly not 56.  I am 53 and I concede to having more aches and pains than I did as a younger person, but since I am in much better shape than I was back then, I can DO so much more and knees creaking every now and then is SO worth it.

I just read an interview with Dara Torres and she said that a big difference for her is that it now takes her longer to warm up than when she was younger.  I am taking that to heart and as I leave for my bike ride in a few minutes, I plan on taking longer than usual at a slow pace and on a non-hilly stretch of road and see what that does for me.  So, you might take that into consideration and just allow yourself a little extra warm-up time.

Anyway, welcome to BT.  This is the best site I have ever found of this type.  Make sure you use the logs.  They are a valuable resource and have pretty much anything that you might want.  Check out the thread that pertains to your state as they will keep you up to date on events in your area.  Also check out the Challenges section as those can be a lot of fun as well.

Congrats on comitting to fitness!  You are not too old to become involved in triathlon.  I can't count the number of "senior" triathletes have blown by me in races.  Look around the site, it has some really good information.  Ask questions the members are very, very knowledgeable and supportive.  Pick a training plan and get started.

Good luck on your first team sprint.

I did my first tri when I was 56.  Last year, when I was 57, I had a young 20 something gal come up to me after a race and tell me that she had been behind me the whole time, looking at the age marked on my leg, and I had been an inspiration for her to keep moving.  I love the training, the people, and the races.  BT is a GREAT place to find support for the complete craziness of it all.  Welcome!

Awesome and congratulations on your decision.  I just don't see the downside to people staying healthy throughout their lives.

Like the saying goes; "Age is just a number"!! My mother is 65 and is doing her first relay in tri this year. She's biking but I've got her starting to do interval running to not put too much strain on her "new hip" LOL..and she's going to join the Y this fall and integrate swimming so that eventually she can do a complete tri on her own!

I'm 37 and still carrying quite a bit more "weight" but know that I am in better shape than some girls in the 20's! Just keep moving! There was a 70 year old woman that completed the Philly Women's Tri and blew me out of the water! I hope I can keep this up for that long!

I'm 56.  I did my first sprint triathlon in February 2004 at age 50, and I did my first half-marathon this past February (see my avatar photo).  This was all after having heart valve replacement surgery in December 2000.

Still need to lose some weight, but life is good otherwise.

I'm 52, did my first sprint tri two years ago, and this spring I did a HIM.  I have a good friend who is 78 years young.  She didn't even start any of this until 20 years ago, and she still does at least one tri every year.  She's also out at every single running race in town, belongs to the local bike club and does their time trials, and is a great inspiration to all of us!  Just make sure you get the training in before you give it a tri.
