I know this is silly to most of you hardcores, but it was my fourth swim ever and I FINALLY made it all the way to the local sprint tri buoy and back.  (400m total.)

Of course, I made the mistake of looking up the result times when I got back and realized that my 14:20 time wasn't even back-of-the-pack (which is more like 11 minutes).  Oh well, gotta start somewhere.

In any case, it gvies me great confidence to know I'm physically capable of completing the swim leg, even if I'd get out of the water several minutes after everyone else.

Good for you!  Now you know you can do it.  The next time, it will be even easier.  Keep swimming!

You are doing it in the proper order:

Do it
Do it faster

You must be able to do the first before you can work on the second. Congrats!

Way to go. I just did an open water swim at the local quarry, and was really pleased that I had the guts to get in the water (90 foot deep)Stuck near the wall the whole time, next week we move to the center (sorta)

Congrats on the accomplishment (and BTW, don't discount the significance of what you have done and are doing.  Even the hardcore athletes had to start somewhere and work through that accomplishment SOMETIME in their life.

I keep saying that as a newb, the best thing to do is work on slow and steady because it helps form and more importantly, "CONFIDENCE!"  Now that you know you can do it, you can work on getting faster.  Congratulations on the milestone.

Did you not complete the swim before?  If not, did you still do the rest of the event?

Or; this is the fourth practice swim?  If so, I wish the lake my Tri was at left the buoy's out!!!

(I'm new to Tri's so I'm puzzled by this.)

This was my fourth practice swim.  I haven't done the event yet - just watched twice.  It was because of the swim that I've been holding out, although they do have team categories.  I'm hoping to do next Monday's event.  If not, the last one of the summer is the week after and I'll hit that instead.
