Subject: 1st Tri turned into a duathlon due to e-coli, unhappy with my bike portion
I did well for the first 2 mile run 7 min/mile, great transition, then had issues getting my shoes on my feet while clipped into the pedals (learned my lesson to practice before hand). This took my bike average speed from around 18.2 mph (computer) to 17.4 on the course. The last 3 mile run was brutal, I was dead, but still finished with 8 min/mile for the 3 miles.

So I signed up for a Tri, still will be my first, in 2 weeks.

My issue is the cycling portion. I thought I did well at speed of around 18 mph, but got passed about twice to three times as much as I passed others. I finished middle of the pack for cycling times, I have been a runner for several years and my cardio is very good, but how do I increase my speed for the cycling portion?

Thanks

Same way you became a decent runner: do lots of it "for several years."

It's hard to compare your performance to how you finish in the pack. I am a poor swimmer, my goal at my first couple of races was not to have to be rescued, but I finished MOP in both. I felt my bike was the strong point at around 19 but I got my can handed to me and finished waaay back in the bike. It depends on the race and the people in it for your position, not really on your performance.

Fair enough, I am doing a sprint for my first coming up. Do I need to ride longer distances, then some shorter fast rides? Running was easy as I could crank up the treadmill slowly. I have kind of gotten stagnant on running around 7-7:30/mile. I am really enjoying cycling and want to build my speed here as it seemed like it was where I lost the most ground. My goal in most races is to finish top third.

Are you talking about Shelbyville? I checked my computer and it looks like the bike was long. I had 14.5 miles and they may have calculated paces based upon 14 miles. Anyhow, my average was off by about a mile an hour. Some of it was the length the other go figure! As far as increasing your cycling you may just need to ride more. Nice job!

Both longer rides and shorter faster rides. Mix it up, different paces, different terrain. If you're serious about getting better, you should be riding five, six days a week and over 150 miles per week. If you're not there now, build gradually, but then ride consistently. Months, years.

yes it was Shelbyville, I didn't look at the mileage on my computer just Average when I dismounted, but that wouldn't account for my post transition issues with my shoes, thanks

I cannot ride that much right now as I am also training for my first marathon in Nov. I will just maintain until my first (again) Tri a week from Sunday.

Thanks
