Subject: Treadmill Hazard- keep the key away from kids! We were at a friend's house today and the kids were in the playroom in the basement. They thought it would be a good idea to play on the treadmill. Julia, our 6-yr-old, fell and got trapped between the wall and treadmill and ended up with 1st and 2nd degree burns/abrasions to her shoulder, back, knees, elbows, and right hand. She was in lots of pain. Took her to the ED for drugs and dressings. Here's a few pics. Being an ED nurse, I've heard the horror stories of kids getting trapped and abrading the skin right down to the bone. Never thought it would happen to me. We thought we could trust our kids, had told them treadmills are only for adults, and our friends had the key up high, in a bowl, away from the treadmill, but the oldest knew where it was. I just wanted to remind everyone to hide and lock up their treadmill safety key and don't store it with the end against a wall or in a corner. I've also seen a child who turned it on when it was folded up and was trapped between the wall and treadmill, suffering 3rd degree burns down their entire face and body. Please be careful with your treadmills. |
